Metro NY 12.13.11 In the December 13, 2011 edition of Metro New York, AABANY Director and criminal defense attorney Vinoo Varghese was quoted in connection with the front page article on the shooting of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski.  Varghese spoke about the difficulty of extradition as a possible cause for North Carolina not willing to pick up alleged shooter Lamont Pride on outstanding warrants.  
The December 7, 2011 edition of Sing Tao Daily included a story about Karen Wu, Co-Chair of AABANY's Pro Bono and Community Service Committee, being recognized as New York State Bar Association Outstanding Young Lawyer of 2012. Karen Wu  
Yim & Chuang Jane Chuang, AABANY IP Committee Co-Chair, and her partner Michael Yim (also an AABANY member) were mentioned in a Nov. 23 New York Times article about young lawyers taking the path of starting their own law firms rather than taking the traditional law firm route.  

On October 12, Kin Ng, former AABANY Prosecutors' Committee Co-Chair, spoke as part of a NYCLA panel on multi-lingual lawyering. The New York Law Journal published  photo and article about it on October 17. Click on the image to read more.

A Judge’s Education, a Sentence at a Time

On October 7, 2011, the New York Times published an article about Judge Denny Chin's sentencing decisions.

There’s no doubt that all of these cases shaped me,” Judge Chin said, “and shaped the way I think, and the way I respond to things.

The August 25, 2011 edition of the Daily News, in its Queens edition, ran several stories about the census count in that borough, and among the stories was one entitled “Standing Up to be Counted,” reporting on the efforts of ACCORD (Asian American Community Coalition for Redistricting and Democracy) to call for a more transparent process. Federal Lawyer August 2011 Hon. Denny Chin profile The Federal Lawyer, a publication of the Federal Bar Association, published a profile of Hon. Denny Chin written by past AABANY President Vincent Chang in the August 2011 issue.  Click on the image to read the profile.  

On July 27, AABANY, together with nine other APA groups, took part in a press conference held at MinKwon Center in Flushing, Queens, to announce the formation of ACCORD, the Asian American Community Coalition for Re-districting and Democracy.  Coverage in the Asian press included: World Journal, Sing Tao, Epoch Times, Korea Times, Korea Daily, New York Ilbo.

Asian Bar Celebrates Anniversary The Prosecutors' Committee's three-year anniversary took place on June 30 at NYCLA and coverage of it appeared in The New York Law Journal on July 5.  Hon. Randall Eng, John Flock and Hugh Mo were honored as trailblazers in the prosecutors' offices.  Read more at the aabany.ED blog
Congratulations to former AABANY President, the Hon. China Judges at City Bar June 2011

The New York City Bar hosted a reception on Tuesday for a delegation of some 46 judges from China who are taking part in a four-week program at Columbia Law School to gain understanding of the U.S. legal system.

On June 7, AABANY and the New York City Bar Committee on Foreign and Comparative Law co-sponsored a reception in June at New York City Bar for more than 40 Chinese judges and scholars.  The event received coverage in the Chinese press, including:

At the NYSBA Annual Meeting held in New York City in January, NYSBA's Committee on Diversity presented a program called "Do the Right Thing," covering best practices for diverse attorneys in networking, mentoring and developing as a professional and leader.  James Chou, AABANY's Immediate Past President, was among the panelists.  The June 2011 NYSBA Journal ran a slightly edited transcript from the event.  Click on the image (right) to read the article.
