New York City Bar's (NYCB) Muslim-American Community: An Introduction to the Basics of Islamic Practices and Relevant Emerging Legal Trends

The program is targeted at assisting attorneys representing clients in any cases involving Muslims or in any cases dealing with Islam generally, but especially in the context of employment litigation, Fourth Amendment privacy issues, prison litigation, and other relevant First Amendment, Title VII, and Religious Land Use and Institutional Persons Act (“RLUIPA”) practice. The course provides information about the basic religious beliefs, practices, and traditions of Islam — and how they are practiced by Muslim communities in the U.S., as well as emerging legal trends that raise issues unique to Muslims in the workplace, schools, prisons, and public spaces. Recent legal developments relating to the First Amendment, Fourth Amendment, RLUIPA, New York State Human Rights Law (“NYSHRL”), and Title VII will be highlighted.
