Last year, New York court interpreters assisted litigants in more than 14,000 hearings in close to 100 different languages. The increasing linguistic diversity of our city and state poses challenges as the court system provides access to justice for New Yorkers with limited spoken English proficiency. Our distinguished panel will explore the New York State Office of Language Access’s new initiatives in light of the day-to-day challenges facing litigants, advocates, and judges. Their discussion will address changing technology and other resources needed to facilitate court interpreting, as well as rising concern over access to justice within our immigrant communities.

• Christine Clarke, Directing Attorney, Civil Rights Justice Initiative, Legal Services NYC

• N.Y.C. Council Member, Rory Lancman, Chair of the Committee on Courts and Legal Services

• Hon. Raja Rajeswari, Judge of the Criminal Court of the City of New York, Richmond County Criminal Court

• Sandro Tomasi, Certified Court Interpreter

• Dan Weitz, Director for the Office of Court Administration’s Division of Professional and Court Services

Co-sponsored by the Women in the Courts Task Force and the Criminal Court, Litigation, and Minorities in the Courts Committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York
