NEW YORK – December 18, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that the Commission on Judicial Nominations has named Kathy Hirata Chin (Partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham, & Taft LLP) as one of seven well-qualified nominees for the judgeship vacancy on the New York State Court of Appeals created by the retirement of Judge Robert Smith. The Commission on Judicial Nomination, charged with evaluating and recommending to the Governor candidates to fill vacancies on the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, received 53 applications and interviewed 22 candidates for the Smith opening. NEW YORK – November 18, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), the Racial Justice Project of the Impact Center for Public Interest Law at New York Law School (NYLS), and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association at NYLS are hosting a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program, “Shattering the Model Minority Myth: Asian Pacific Americans Facing Poverty in New York City” at New York Law School. The program will take place on November 18, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at 185 West Broadway, New York, NY 10013 in Room W401. A reception with light refreshments will precede the program. NEW YORK – November 5, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that AABANY Past President and current New York State Bar Association President Glenn Lau-Kee and AABANY Advisory Committee Member Sandra Leung have been announced as the National Association of Asian American Professionals – New York Chapter (NAAAP-NY) 2014 Most Influential Asian Pacific Islander American New Yorkers. Mr. Lau-Kee and Ms. Leung will be honored at NAAAP-NY’s Moon Festival Honoree Gala at the Harvard Club of New York City on November 7, 2014. Click here to read the press release.

NEW YORK – October 23, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is pleased to announce that on October 20, Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti announced the appointment of Hon. Alexander B. Jeong as Deputy Administrative Judge of the New York Criminal Courts, effective immediately. Judge Jeong is the first Asian Pacific American to serve the Unified Court System in this capacity. In his new role, Judge Jeong will oversee one of the nation’s busiest courts, which has trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors and petty offenses and preliminary jurisdiction over felonies in New York City’s five boroughs. NEW YORK – October 20, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that Government Service & Public Interest Committee Co-Chair Katrina Goyco has been named one of Legal Services NYC’s Top 30 Pro Bono Lawyers of 2014 for her tireless efforts on an AABANY U-Visa initiative for immigrant victims of domestic violence. NEW YORK – September 15, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that United States District Court Magistrate Judge Marilyn D. Go, Eastern District New York, will receive the inaugural Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award. New York, NY — June 19, 2014 —The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) is partnering with Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) to expand pro bono legal services to low-income Asian Americans in NYC. The collaboration will begin with a pilot program offering AABANY members a CLE training on immigration remedies available to victims of domestic violence. Training participants will represent clients pro bono to obtain U Nonimmigrant Status, commonly known as “U-Visas.” U-Visas are available to crime victims who have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse and have cooperated with law enforcement. Pro bono attorneys will prepare U-Visas for LSNYC clients under the supervision of LSNYC attorneys. The first training will take place on June 25, 2014. Click here to read the press release.

NEW YORK – June 17, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that along with the MinKwon Center and the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (“KALAGNY”), we will be working to provide Asian American communities with free legal assistance in compliance with the renewed guidelines and application forms for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) released by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”). NEW YORK – April 25, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) announces its support of the Joint Statement on Comfort Women Issue regarding the City of Glendale, California’s approval of a public memorial commemorating the more than 200,000 Asian and Dutch women coerced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Armed Forces of Japan between 1932 and 1945. NEW YORK –  April 24, 2014 - The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is pleased to announce its Executive Director, Yang Chen, will be receiving one of the Binghamton University Alumni Association’s Medals of Distinguished Service. A graduate of the Class of 1987, Yang Chen will be honored among many other esteemed alumni at the 2014 Special Recognition Award Ceremony on Saturday, April 26, 2014. NEW YORK –  February 26, 2014 - The Asian American Bar Association of New York ("AABANY”) will hold its 25th Anniversary Annual Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street. Attendees of the 2014 AABANY Annual Dinner will include prominent federal and state judges, elected officials and dignitaries, attorneys from large and small law firms, corporate law departments, prosecutors’ offices and government agencies. NEW YORK – January 27, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York ("AABANY”) is proud to announce that it will receive a 2013 Bar Leaders Innovation Award for its Asian Pacific American Heritage Month production, "Iva: The Myth of Tokyo Rose.”  The award bestowed by the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders Executive Council of the New York State Bar Association recognizes bar associations that introduce new programs, ideas and methodologies that benefit its members and the community at large.  AABANY’s "Tokyo Rose” program was evaluated based on its ingenuity and creativity, effect on the bar and general public, and its overall quality.  Click here to read the press release.
