AABANY Annual Meeting, Feb. 12 -- Proxy Ballots Due This Friday

When: February 12, 7pm-9pm

Please join us for one of our most important events of the year -- AABANY's Annual Meeting. All active members in good standing are invited to attend and vote in the AABANY Officer and Director Elections and amend the by-laws for Fiscal Year 2015.

If you are planning to attend in person, please register here. If you are an active member who would like to vote in these elections but are unable to attend in person, please complete the Annual Meeting Proxy Ballot. Navigating the Maze of What is Eligible for Patent Protection CLE, Feb. 5

The AABANY Intellectual Property Committee presents Navigating the Maze of What is Eligible for Patent Protection!

When: Feb. 5, 2015, 6:30-7:30PM
Where: Wiggin and Dana LLP (450 Lexington Avenue, 38th Floor)

Not everything is eligible for patent protection! In a series of recent decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court, significantly raised the threshold for what types of ideas are eligible for patent protection. Our panelists will discuss the new elevated standard set forth in these recent Supreme Court decisions and its impact, particularly with regards to software, business methods, biologic materials, and medical diagnostics tools. The panelists will further discuss the controversial implementation of these decisions by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and their impact.

Now that the Supreme Court has spoken, this CLE seminar revists issues previously discussed in our “Patents 101: What Can Be Protected by Patent Rights?” seminar from last year. Come and find out more about this cutting-edge issue that has significantly changed our patent system.

AALDEF 2014 Exit Poll Result Presentations, Feb. 5

On November 4, 2014, over 580 AALDEF volunteers surveyed 4,102 Asian American voters, in 11 Asian languages, at 64 poll sites in 38 cities in 11 states – Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia – and Washington, DC about their voting encounters in the nation’s largest nonpartisan multilingual exit poll. The exit poll reveals vital information about Asian American voting patterns that is often overlooked in mainstream voter surveys.

At these presentations, comparative information will be given about the Asian American vote in the Gubernatorial and Congressional elections, concerns about key issues, first-time voters, and profiles of the Asian American vote by ethnicity, nativity, party enrollment, age, and English proficiency.

Immigration Executive Action and LGBT Asian Americans/ South Asians, Feb. 12

The LGBT Committee of the Asian American Bar Association of New York presents Immigration Executive Action and LGBT Asian Americans/ South Asians: What's Good, What's Left Out, and Our Next Steps!

When: Feb. 12, 6pm-8pm
Where: Project Reach in Chinatown (39 Eldridge Street, 4th floor, New York, NY 10002)

Immigration attorneys and advocates will explain President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. Presenters will highlight the special concerns and impact of administrative relief on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian American/ South Asian immigrants. Specific emphasis will be on visas for professional workers, student visa OPTS, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Childhood Arrivals (DAPA). Individual attorney consultations and reception with light refreshments to follow.

Seeking Volunteer Attorneys to Assist Appellate Judge

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant, or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some trial court matters.

Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity for volunteer, and an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of our former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.

Willing to fill out paperwork for fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.

Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
