Interested in Pro Bono Opportunities with AABANY?

This past year, the Government Service Public Interest (GSPI) and Pro Bono and Community Services (PBCS) Committees have been committed to providing AABANY members a greater range of pro bono opportunities.

These committees are surveying everyone’s interest in the pro bono initiatives that they are developing, so that they can determine how to best allocate AABANY resources. Training will be provided to you prior to your participation and will likely offer CLE credits. Click here for the survey: http://bit.ly/gspi2015

You can read in the Summer 2015 issue of the AABANY Advocate about a success story from the U Visa Representation Project, representing domestic violence survivors. Here is the link: http://bit.ly/uvisaproj

AABANY Co-Sponsors: New York Trusts and Estates CLE, Oct. 7

This three-part program offers an overview of estate planning basics. Our speakers will guide attendees through an initial client meeting, point out key pieces of information to gather, and discuss the use and importance of advanced directives. Then, they will explain the fundamentals of preparing and executing basic estate planning documents, including wills, trusts and related documents. Next, they will discuss fiduciary selection concerns and explore administration issues. Finally, our speakers will wrap things up by tackling some of the ethical issues related to estate planning.

Pauline Yeung-Ha will be speaking at session 2 in Feb. 2016. For more details, please see Upcoming Events.

Congratulations to Jean Lee

Congratulations to AABANY’s very own Jean Lee for being featured as a Catalyst Spotlight on the Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) website!  Jean served as AABANY President from 2012-2013 and currently sits on the AABANY Board of Directors.

CUP interviewed Jean and asked her about the challenges she has faced in this profession, proudest achievements, and leaders that she looks up to.

“What is your proudest achievement?

My proudest professional achievement is in two parts: (i) being a lawyer for JPMorgan Chase & Co.; and (ii) winning several Daubert motions against very senior partners when I was a mid-level associate. They are my proudest moments because it was so unexpected and unlikely.”

Jean also credits much of her success to having mentors in her. Seeing the value and benefits of mentorship, she currently mentors students and young lawyers.

AABANY In the News: Past President Andrew Hahn Quoted in The Economist

Andrew Hahn, AABANY President 2004, offers his insight on the growing issue of discrimination against Asian Americans. Read about Asian Americans, Ivy League admission, and more in The Economist’s “The model minority is losing patience,” published in print October 3, 2015.

Andy’s comments appear towards the end:

Andrew Hahn, a Korean-American partner in Duane Morris, a law firm, says, “I used to be a Twinkie, or maybe a banana—yellow outside, white inside—but once I hit the legal profession, I became a radical.”

AABANY 2015 Membership Committee Delegate Program

Membership Secretary Irene Tan is seeking interested law students to serve as Membership Committee Delegates for AABANY. As a Membership Committee Delegate, law students will participate on the Membership Steering Committee and have the opportunity to work with senior leadership to develop and execute key strategic membership initiatives for the organization.

Membership Committee Delegates are required to attend a minimum of four AABANY-sponsored events in a semester where the Membership Committee Delegate will assist with checking in attendees at events, distributing marketing materials, and promoting the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will be invited to participate on other Membership projects on an ad hoc basis.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting more involved in the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will attend AABANY events for free, quickly develop an expansive network within the organization, and contribute to and collaborate on membership initiatives for one of the largest minority bar associations in New York.
