AABANY’s Monthly Pro Bono Legal Clinic at Asian Americans for Equality, a walk-in free legal service service given the second Wednesday of each month, was recently featured in the Chinese-language newspaper Sing Tao on July 17, 2016. Their coverage includes a photo with Pro Bono & Community Service Committee Co-Chair June Lee and quotes from our Pro Bono & Community Service Committee Co-Chair Samuel Lui. AABANY President Susan Shin was featured in The New York Law Journal:

During her term, Shin plans to work with other officers, the board of the association and committee chairs to invigorate and actively engage the association’s roughly 1,100 members to take part in the association’s theme for 2016: “Speak up, Rise up, and Lift up,” which calls on members to work together, help each other advance and succeed, be vocal in affecting positive change at firms, companies and organizations at which we work and devote time to mentor and train young Asian American lawyers.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York hosted the prosecutors' committee's eighth anniversary reception Thursday, honoring Alexander Jeong, deputy administrative judge of the New York City Criminal Court, and Diane Gujarati, deputy chief of the criminal division in the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office.

Executive Director Yang Chen, along with Kin Ng and James Lin from the Prosecutors’ Committee, appear on camera to offer a few thoughts about the event.

In a June 5 article in The Atlantic, Garrett Epps comments on the controversy surrounding Donald Trump’s criticism of Judge Curiel by citing the 1998 case of Macdraw Inc. v. CIT Equipment Financing. That case is notable for the fact that the Hon. Denny Chin presided over it.

Congratulations to Donna Chiu, AABANY Member and attorney at Asian Americans for Equality, on her recent honor from the New York City Bar Association. One of five recipients, Donna was honored at the City Bar’s 27th Annual Legal Services Awards recognizing those who provide full-time outstanding civil legal assistance to New York’s poor.

On Wednesday night, I dusted off the old tuxedo (which thankfully still fit) and headed down to Cipriani Wall Street for the 27th annual dinner of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY). I greatly enjoyed last year’s banquet, so I was looking forward to this year’s festivities (which sold out weeks in advance).

On January 4, 2016, the City of New York released, "Mayor de Blasio Appoints 26 Judges to Family, Criminal, and Civil Courts."

One of the founding members of AABANY's Prosecutors Committee, Judge Don Leo was newly appointed to New York County Criminal Court, effective December 29, 2015.

Judge Dean Kusakabe was also re-appointed to Family Court, where he has served since July 21.
