Young Lawyers Committee Kick-Off Meeting, May 17

When: May 17, 7pm-9pm

The Young Lawyers Committee will have its first meeting of the 2016-2017 year on May 17, 2016 at Lee Anav Chung White & Kim LLP. Meet your new co-chairs, discuss potential events for the year, and network with other young lawyers. Food will be provided.

Race, Color, and Citizenship: Ozawa and Thind in the 1920s, May 31

On May 31 from 6pm-8pm, White & Case LLP will present Race, Color, and Citizenship: Ozawa and Thind in the 1920s

When, by law, only “free white persons” and “persons of African descent” could be naturalized, the Supreme Court addresses where Asians fit in. For more information on this reenactment, click here

On June 1, the Government Service & Public Interest Committee and Pro Bono & Community Service Committee will hold a Joint Meeting at Manhattan Legal Services. AABANY Movie Night Interest Survey: Seoul Searching, June 17

The theatrical premiere of Seoul Searching, an indie film by Benson Lee, will be held at the AMC Empire 25 theatre at Times Square on June 17, 2016. The movie will be followed by a brief Q&A with the cast members and filmmakers. If you're interested in joining us, let us know by answering this survey. Cost of tickets will be $15-20 per person.

The ensemble cast is made up of Cha In Pyo (“Mr. Kim), Justin Chon (“Sid Park), Teo Yoo (“Klaus Kim”), Esteban Ahn (“Sergio”), Hee Jun Han (“Chow), Jessika Van (“Grace Park”), Rosalina Leigh (“Kris Schwartz”), Sue Son (“Sara Han”) and Crystal Kay (“Jamie Choi”) along with Executive Producer, Ken Jeong.

Attendees of this special screening are also invited to attend an after-party with cast members for free, from 9:30pm to midnight. Location TBD.

Congratulations to Dennis Hopkins

Congratulations to AABANY Advisory Committee Member Dennis Hopkins! He has been named one of New York City Bar Association’s 2016 Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award Winners, along with Justice Rosalyn Richter, Conway S. Ekpo, and Joseph A. Tillman.

The award recognizes the critical role individual attorneys have played in initiating and sustaining change within their organizations and the overall New York legal community. The award recipients embody the New York City Bar Association’s Statement of Diversity Principles, which defines diversity as an inclusive concept, encompassing race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, nationality, age, disability and marital and parental status.

The awards will be presented at the Diversity and Inclusion Celebration Dinner on June 22nd. For more information, click here.

Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
