    Congratulations to Don Liu

Please join us in congratulating the new Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Target and long-time AABANY friend Don Liu.

Don continues to inspire a younger generation of attorneys through his unparalleled accomplishments in the legal industry. We are proud to have had his leadership and mentorship. We thank him for his many years of service as a leader and friend and wish him the utmost luck in his new role at Target.

In the News: Woman forced into teen prostitution weds in ceremony led by judge who prosecuted her traffickers

Click here to read a story in the New York Daily News about how human trafficking victim Carmen found love again after being forced into prostitution at age 14. Featured in this triumphant article of strength, compassion, and justice is our very own Judge Pamela Chen, who presided over Carmen’s wedding and also prosecuted the human traffickers in federal court.

Judge Pamela Chen, who prosecuted the human traffickers in federal court, presided over the wedding of Carmen to her husband Luis, praising her “indomitable will to thrive and be happy.”

“No one deserves to find happiness and love more than Carmen,” the judge said. “Carmen’s ability to transcend her prior experiences is breathtaking.”

Know Your Rights Community Trainings - Volunteers Needed

AABANY is recruiting volunteers to be trained to give basic housing trainings to the Flushing community at Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) located at 35-24 Union Street.

Trainings to the volunteers will be provided by Legal Services NYC at 40 Worth Street. Starting in August, volunteers can shadow experienced public interest lawyers on a monthly basis at night. Eventually, once the volunteer becomes comfortable, they can give the training themselves under the supervision of an experienced housing lawyer. Volunteers also have the opportunity to work at the Pro Bono Committee’s Monthly General Advice Clinic in Manhattan Chinatown!

We are looking for committed volunteers who have demonstrated interest in social justice and want to help the community. As a volunteer, you will be asked to commit to being trained, observing at least one training, and giving one or more trainings to the community. Chinese language skills are a plus although may not be necessary.

If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Government Service & Public Interest Committee Co-Chair Anita Wu at anita.wu@aabany.org.

Thank You to Our Pro Bono Clinic Volunteers

AABANY’s monthly legal clinic is made possible only by our volunteers. The Pro Bono Committee would like to thank Beatrice Leong, Dorothy Hong, In Cho Lee, Rosie Wong and Amy Zhang for their efforts in our July legal clinic!

Thanks to the hard work of our Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY started its first monthly pro bono clinic in 2015. This free legal clinic takes place the second Wednesday of every month at Asian Americans for Equality at 111 Division Street. Those interested in volunteering with our Pro Bono & Community Service Committee should contact june.lee@aabany.org.

    AABANY & MuBANY Summer Special

AABANY and MuBANY are excited to announce the 2016 Joint Bar Program, which offers eligible members reduced membership rates in AABANY for a limited time.

Members of one bar association will be eligible for a special reduction (approximately 50%) in their first year dues of the other bar association if they elect to join. Eligibility to receive this special reduction is limited to active, dues-paying members of either AABANY or MuBANY who are either new members or have not been a member of the other bar association in the last two years. To join, eligible members of AABANY or MuBANY should provide their names and email addresses via this online form in the appropriate section.

Take advantage of this limited time offer by July 31, 2016.

Volunteers Needed to Defend Asian American Voting Rights

In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated "Asian” voting lines. When the news media reported on election results, Asian Americans were overlooked. In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns and document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.

We need your help. In the 2012 elections, 850 volunteers polled 9,096 Asian American voters in 14 states and Washington, DC. Volunteers work in 3-hour shifts. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers in October (90 minutes for CLE credits). All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help.
