Panel I - Corporate Commitment to Diversity

Leaders with experience in major corporations will discuss why diversity is important to corporations and what initiatives to broaden and deepen diversity have worked for them. How may a person of diverse background capitalize on these initiatives?  The panelists will provide (i) views on the key drivers that motivate the selection of advocates and neutrals and (ii) tips on how a candidate can shine above others.

Panel II - Identifying Implicit Bias and Developing Strategies for Responding to Implicit Bias

The panelists will address how implicit bias or unconscious bias impacts the mediation process, how to identify implicit bias, and what tools mediators and advocates can employ to address the perceived implicit bias.  The panel will inform us of the neuroscience research findings regarding implicit bias. Thought-provoking examples of what may trigger implicit bias or unconscious bias in the mediator will be presented, as well as how implicit bias or unconscious bias affects the parties and advocates.

Panel III - Ethical Issues for Mediators and Attorneys

Ethical issues can also arise in the context of mediation proceedings, both from the perspectives of the mediator and the attorneys representing the disputants.  This highly interactive program, led by two facilitators with the help of a moderator, will explore some of those issues through the use of short vignettes that illustrate how such issues could arise, for example, in the joint session, during an individual caucus, and even after the mediation session has concluded.
