Worrying About the "Asian F" during COVID-19: How to Decide What Kind of Education is Best for Our Children

With standard instruction currently upended, parents are worried about how much their children are learning in school. We feel stressed as we try to balance our own work with providing the best opportunities for our children. Parents increasingly are turning to supplemental education, such as after-school tutoring and instructional websites, in an effort to compensate for schools and keep our kids academically competitive. In effect, more families are becoming like so-called “Tiger parents” who push education and want their kids to be at or ahead of school expectations.

Supplementing a child’s school curriculum is not new to many families and, in fact, has been a rapidly growing trend for years. Families across the economic spectrum have been adding to their kids’ school learning through at-home guidance by parents, after-school learning centers, or even a paid coach. It becomes one more activity alongside music, sports, etc. The costs, however, are more than financial and its impact has far-reaching implications on the pipeline of AAPIs that enter law school and the profession.

Pawan Dhingra, Professor at Amherst College and author of “Hyper Education - Why Good Schools, Good Grades, and Good Behavior Are Not Enough,” will discuss when supplemental education works and when it doesn't, help parents think through their motivations, explain how teachers and college admissions officers view it, reveal how children feel having gone through it, and help parents decide if this is the right approach for their family. The goal is to create life-long learners.

Panelist:

· Pawan Dhingra, Professor of American Studies & Faculty Equity & Inclusion Officer at Amherst College

Moderator:

· Alia Wong, Reporter & Former Associate Editor at The Atlantic
