In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, A&O Shearman invites you to join us and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) for our annual trial reenactment and panel discussion. This year’s theme delves into the persistent challenges faced by Asian community members who are often treated or perceived as “perpetual foreigners.”
Titled “From "Tokyo Rose" to the China Initiative,” this year’s script features trials and tribulations of World War II radio broadcaster Iva Toguri d’Aquino, infamously known as "Tokyo Rose," and scientists Tsien Hsue-Shen and Wen Ho Lee, among others. These cases have ignited profound discussions about the injustices faced by Asians, often under the pretext of national security. Through their stories, we are reminded of the systemic challenges and prejudices that Asian communities have confronted throughout history.
The event will be hosted by associate Rachel Lee, and will include a panel moderated by partner John Hwang. Panelists include Dr. Anming Hu, one of the individuals arrested, indicted, and acquitted under the China Initiative, Gisela Kusakawa, founding executive director of the Asian American Scholar Forum (AASF), and Chris Kwok, a distinguished arbitrator, mediator, educator, and advocate in the Asian American community.
Following the reenactment and panel discussion, networking receptions will take place in New York and Washington, D.C.
This program has been approved for two (2) credit hours in the Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias category, and is suitable for only non-transitional NY attorneys.
