Event Details
AABANY’s Litigation Committee is proud to present the 2025 Trial Advocacy Program ("TAP"). TAP offers junior lawyers a unique opportunity to hone their trial skills under the guidance of experienced mentors. This year, we will conduct TAP in-person in three parts over two days, culminating in a mock trial exercise. CLE certificates to be generated for all participants after 1/25 program ends. Registration is $60 for non-members, and $50 for members. Please make sure you are logged into your AABANY account and that your membership is active. We will refund $20 after participation in the event.  Financial aid is available for qualified attorneys. Please request a financial aid application from cle@aabany.org before registering.
Please register for both days of TAP using the January 10 calendar entry. (1) Opening Statements and Direct Examinations

Friday, Jan. 10, 6:00 pm

Presented by: Hon. James Cho, U.S. Magistrate Judge, Eastern District of New York, and Manisha Sheth, Partner, Quinn Emanuel

This program will focus on how to give effective direct examinations and opening statements. Hear from a Federal Magistrate Judge/Former Assistant US Attorney, and from a seasoned trial lawyer, on how to open a case with a compelling opening statement that whets a jury’s appetite and entices them to want to learn more about your case. The faculty will also help you craft a direct examination that helps you shine a spotlight on your witness and craft questions to highlight the most pertinent and compelling points in your case.

(2) Cross-Examinations and Closing Statements

Friday, Jan. 10

Presented by: Joe Gim, Chief of Criminal Court, Kings County District Attorney’s Office, and Eugene Kim, Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice (The Legal Aid Society)

This program will focus on the art of cross examinations and closing statements. Joe Gim and Eugene Kim will share their expertise in how to formulate a strong cross examination and potentially corner them into a “gotcha” situation if the facts permit. You will also learn how to tie the facts from direct and cross examinations into a strong summation that moves the jury.
