Boston, Chair of the Diversity Committee at Kaye Scholer LLP, S. Jeanine Conley, partner at Baker & Hostetler LLP and President of the Association of Black Women Attorneys, Vincent T. Chang, partner at Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch LLP and former AABANY President, and Andrew T. Get Connected @ AABANY

This month, AABANY is launching its Get Connected @ AABANY campaign.  You may have seen the Get Connected @ AABANY logo on the homepage of our website.  The idea behind this campaign is to highlight the role AABANY has played in the professional and personal lives of its members and how being an active participant in AABANY, its events, program and initiatives have opened up doors to a variety of opportunities.  In the coming weeks, we plan to feature articles and videos about people who got connected through AABANY.  Our first installment features AABANY Legal Intern Melerie Shih, Cardozo Law School '13.  Hear how AABANY connected her to internships first with AABANY and then with Hess Corporation for the summer.

As part of this campaign, we will give one free t-shirt to each person that joins AABANY during the month of May, while supplies last.  Join AABANY today and get your "Get Connected @ AABANY" t-shirt.

And if you have a story you'd like to share about how you got "Connected @ AABANY," tell us about it at [email protected].

Take the AABANY "Get Connected" Survey

To better serve you, we would like to get some feedback from you.  We have developed a survey directed to our members, past, present and prospective, and we ask that you take a few minutes to fill out the survey and let us know what you think about the events and programs that AABANY has put on and what types of events and programs you would like to see more of in the future.  Your feedback is vital to improving our benefits and programs.  Fill out the survey on-line at this link: http://bit.ly/aabany_survey.

Celebrate APA Heritage Month with AABANY

May is APA Heritage Month and AABANY has been part of many events and activities this month already.  Here's what took place last week:

  • On May 3, AABANY took part in Community Law Day at Foley Square, right by the State and Federal courthouses, to educate the public about the law and how they can obtain access to justice and legal assistance through referral services, volunteer attorney programs and other facilities (see slideshow below).
  • On May 5, AABANY members, many of them alumni of Binghamton University, attended a program entitled "To Be Seen and Heard: The Emergence of an Asian American Political Voice in New York," at the SUNY Global Center in midtown Manhattan, featuring a panel discussion about Asian American political engagement and participation in New York.  The panel was moderated by AABANY co-founder Rocky Chin and included Prof. Lisa Yun, co-founder of the Asian and Asian American Studies program at Binghamton; Margaret Chin, City Council Member; Chung Seto, senior advisor to Comptroller John Liu; State Assemblywoman Grace Meng, who is an AABANY member; and Kevin Kim, City Council candidate in 2009, also an AABANY member.  Comptroller Liu, Binghamton '88, appeared at the end of the panel discussion to present closing remarks.
  • On May 8, AABANY and KALAGNY took a table at the 32nd Annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival at Union Square to celebrate Asian Pacific American culture with a variety of exhibitors, vendors and performers.  Also at the Festival were AALDEF, at the table next to ours, and AAARI a few feet away.  At the other end of our section, MinKwon Center and OCA-New York were also present.  Thanks to the AABANY members and leaders and all the friends and volunteers who stopped by and spent part of their Mother's Day with us.

We have a busy week ahead:

  • Tonight, we are co-sponsoring the King's County District Attorney's Office's APA Heritage Month celebration.
  • Tomorrow, we are co-sponsoring a program celebrating APA Women Attorneys in the Arts, to be held at Dewey & LeBoeuf.
  • Wednesday, the Young Lawyers' Committee, together with AALDEF's Young Professionals Committee, will be holding a networking event at T.G. Whitney's (note the location change).
  • On Thursday,  AABANY and NYCLA will present our APA Heritage Month Celebration of Diversity on the Bench, featuring the current APA judges in New York as special invited guests.  It takes place at NYCLA's Home of the Law downtown. Read the press release.

More details about these events appear below.  We hope to see you at these or other APA Heritage Month events throughout the month.  Check back on our website for updates
