Celebrate APA Heritage Month with AABANY

Last week was a busy one for AABANY with many events:

  • On Monday, May 9, AABANY co-sponsored the Kings County District Attorney’s Office’s APA Heritage Month Celebration at which the Hon. Randall Eng, Appellate Division, Second Department, was among the honorees. The event included a screening of the documentary “Vincent Who?” which was made during the 25th anniversary of Vincent Chin’s murder and explored the legacy of that event on the Asian American community.
  • On Tuesday, May 10, AABANY’s Women’s Committee, along with Dewey & LeBoeuf and the Asian American Arts Alliance presented a Celebration of APA Women Attorneys in the Arts at Dewey & LeBoeuf. It featured a lively discussion moderated by Caroline Sun, a former attorney turned painter, with panelists Blossom Kan (writer), Linda Lin (dancer), Clara Ohr (pianist and vocalist) and Samita Sinha (artist, vocalist, composer). After the discussion, Samita gave a vocal performance and Linda Lin, with Shea McMillan, gave a dance performance. During the cocktail reception, a pre-recorded piano performance by Clara Ohr played while a slideshow of Caroline Sun’s paintings was projected. Thanks to our co-sponsors, particularly Dewey for providing the space. Thanks also to all the panelists for donating their time and their talents to this event.
  • On Wednesday, May 11, AABANY’s Young Lawyers’ Committee teamed up with AALDEF’s Young Professionals Committee to host a Summer Networking Event at T.G. Whitney’s.  The location was changed due to the large response that the event got.  A raffle was held to benefit AALDEF’s anti-human trafficking program.  Thanks to everyone that came out to support the event.
  • On Thursday, May 12, AABANY’s Judiciary Committee, together with NYCLA, hosted a Celebration of Diversity on the Bench, featuring the APA judges in New York as special invited guests.  Judiciary Committee co-chair Vincent Chang welcomed the guests and introduced each of the speakers, starting with Hon. Ann Pfau, Chief Administrative Judge, Supreme Court, New York County, followed by NYCLA President James Kobak, then by AABANY President Linda Lin and concluding with Chief Assistant District Attorney in New York County, Daniel Alonso.  Many of the current APA judges in New York attended, representing both the State and Federal courts at both the trial and appellate levels.  Thanks to all that attended and thanks to NYCLA for co-hosting and providing the space.  Click here for the article about the event that appeared in Sing Tao Daily on May 13 (in Chinese).
  • On Friday, May 13, several AABANY members attended the APALA-NJ Annual Dinner and Installation of Officers held at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  Congratulations to past AABANY Board member Michael Yap for receiving the Corporate Leadership Award.  Congratulations to all the honorees and to the incoming Officers and Directors on the Board of APALA-NJ.
