Celebrate APA Heritage Month with AABANY

As May winds down, here's what went on last week:

  • Sixth Annual City Bar Diversity Champion Awards Luncheon May 24, 2011 On May 24, past AABANY Presidents Andy Hahn and Vince Chang each received the City Bar Diversity Champion Award.  This honor was bestowed upon them during the Sixth Annual City Bar Diversity Champion Award Luncheon held last Tuesday at the New York City Bar Association building on West 44th Street.  It was the first time in the history of this award that any Asian Americans were selected, and AABANY came out in force for the occasion (see photo, r.).  Also honored were Sheila S. Boston of Kaye Scholer and S. Jeanine Conley of Baker Hostetler.  Congratulations to all the honorees.
  • On May 25, AALFNY and AABANY co-sponsored a Spring Reception at Debevoise & Plimpton to recognize the recipients of the AALFNY Community Service Scholarship: Prathiba Desai from CUNY Law School (working for the Somaly Mam Foundation on developing a manual for attorneys to use in order to aid sex-trafficking victims in civil litigation) and Sapna Patel from Boston U School of Law who is working with MFY Legal Services. More than 100 APA law students, judges, associates, partners and in-house counsel were in attendance to meet, catch up and network over drinks and hors d'oeuvres.  Thanks to Debevoise & Plimpton for hosting the event.
  • On May 27, AABANY, represented by Executive Director Yang Chen, joined MinKwon and other APA groups for a press conference to announce an Asian American coalition to support re-districting reform as part of the ReShapeNY Campaign led by Citizens Union.  Speakers at the press conference noted the growth of the Asian American population in New York and advocated for re-districting reform that will give Asian Americans a greater voice in the political and electoral process.  To learn more about  ReShape NY's campaign for fair and independent re-districting, visit their website.
