AABANY Congratulates Lorna Schofield

Last week, Senator Charles Schumer announced the nomination of Lorna Schofield to the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York. If Ms. Schofield is confirmed, she would become the first Filipino-American to be appointed to the Federal bench. AABANY offers her its warmest congratulations and wishes her all the best in the confirmation process.

Join AABANY at AALDEF Lunar New Year Gala

The AALDEF Lunar New Year Gala will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers. Among the recipients of the Justice in Action Award this year will be Parkin Lee. Parkin is an active member of AABANY and NAPABA, and we congratulate him on this great honor.

AABANY invites its members to join AABANY at the AALDEF Gala with a special offer. For just $125 per person, you can get a ticket to this excellent event. After Work Gathering for Asian American Public Interest Attorneys, Jan. 31

The Pro Bono and Community Service Committee invite Asian American public interest attorneys for an after work gathering at M1-5 Bar/Lounge downtown on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Thanks to those who registered. If you did not register, please feel free to join us to meet and mingle with attorneys working in the public interest.

AABANY Co-Sponsors CLE Program on Financial Statements, Feb. 16

AABANY is pleased to co-sponsor with KALAGNY and Herrick Feinstein a program entitled "What Transactional Attorneys Need to Know about Financial Statements," taking place on Feb. 16 at the New York office of Herrick Feinstein. Next Annual Dinner Committee Call: Jan. 31

The next meeting of the Annual Dinner Committee will be by conference call on January 31 at 5 pm. Ozawa/Thind Re-enactment at Cadwalader: Feb. 28

The Hon. Denny Chin’s latest re-enactment of famous cases in Asian American history involved the twin Supreme Court cases of Ozawa and Thind, dealing with issues of race, color and citizenship. If you missed the performance at the NAPABA National Convention last November in Atlanta, you can catch it in New York City on February 28 at the offices of Cadwalader. USMJ Vacancy in SDNY

For those interested in applying to become a United States Magistrate Judge, here is an announcement from Theo Cheng, Co-Chair of the Judiciary Committee:

The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has announced a vacancy for a full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge position in Manhattan. The SDNY's public notice, which contains additional information about the position and the application, is available on the court's website at http://www.nysd.uscourts.gov/cases/show.php?db=notice_bar&id=266. AABANY encourages all qualified attorneys with an interest in serving in the federal judiciary to submit an application, which is due no later than February 29, 2012. Earn CLE Credits by Judging National Mock Trial Competition

On March 10 and 11, 2012, Pace Law School in White Plains will again be hosting a National Mock Trial competition featuring some of the top schools in the country, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth, among others.

Pace is offering 3 free general CLE credits for all attorneys who volunteer to judge a round. A round lasts no longer than 3 hours. Free parking is available and Pace will provide complimentary food and beverage. You can judge as many rounds as you'd like.

Apply for AALFNY 2012 Community Service Scholarships

The Asian American Law Fund of New York, Inc. (the “Fund”), a non-profit organization originally established in 1993 by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), invites law students to apply for its Community Service Scholarship Awards (“Asian American Law Fund Scholarship” or the “Scholarship”). The Fund will award Scholarships in the amount of $5000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.

The completed Scholarship Application and all required materials must be postmarked by April 1, 2012. Applications and further information can be found at bit.ly/AALFNY_Schlrshps2012. NCLEJ Public Interest Fellowship Application Now Being Accepted

The National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) is now accepting applications for Dodyk Fellows for a two-year term starting in September 2012:

The Paul M. Dodyk Fellowship for Economic Justice has been established by generous donors to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice in honor of Paul M. Dodyk, past Chair of NCLEJ and a great champion of using the law to promote economic justice and fair and dignified treatment for everyone in our society, regardless of their means. The Fellowship is designed to foster the next generation of lawyers working for economic justice while enhancing NCLEJ’s capacity to serve those who have the least in our society.
