Celebrate APA Heritage Month with AABANY

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and once again AABANY celebrates with a slew events, including taking part in the 33rd Annual AAPI Heritage Festival; presenting with the Asian American Arts Alliance (a4) and the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) "Revisiting Vincent Chin," a re-enactment of the Vincent Chin trial with a cast of professional actors; and hosting several meetings and events organized by several of our committees. For the full list go to bit.ly/APAHrtg_wAABANY.

Congratulations to Linda S. Lin on Being Nominated to the City Council Districting Commission

AABANY is pleased and excited to announce that last week, the City Council nominated Immediate Past President Linda S. Lin to serve on the City Council Districting Commission. Linda will assist this Commission in the important work of reviewing the existing City Council district lines and determine whether any changes need to be made to account for demographic shifts over the last decade. We congratulate Linda on being nominated to this important role. To read the press release go to bit.ly/PrsRls_DistrctngCmsn_Appts.

Thanks for Coming to the Mentor-Mentee Happy Hour on May 2

On Tuesday night, May 2, AABANY held a Mentor-Mentee Happy Hour at Pranna Lounge. Many current and prospective mentors and mentees met, mingled and caught up over food and drink. We counted many interesting people in the room, including Roslyn Tom, a partner at Baker & McKenzie who was once the first woman at a Japanese securities firm, Don Liu, General Counsel at Xerox who was an avid disco dancer in his high school days, and Margaret Ling, in-house counsel at First American Title and Chair of AABANY’s Real Estate Committee, who swore in Mick Jagger when she clerked for Hon. Constance Baker Motley. We were hoping to announce the launch of the 2012 Mentorship program and talk about the current Mentorship program, but the din of the bar made it impossible. If you would like to learn more about AABANY’s Mentorship Program, contact our Coordinator, Julie Kwon at [email protected]

"Revisiting Vincent: The Legacy of the Vincent Chin Case 30 Years Later"

June 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin, a young Chinese-American man from Detroit who was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat by two autoworkers, at a time when Japanese car imports were up and the American economy was down.  AABANY has joined forces with the Asian American Arts Alliance (a4) and the Museum of Chinese in America to perform the Vincent Chin trial re-enactment with a cast of professional actors.  Testimony from the actual trial transcripts will be woven in with footage from the Academy Award-nominated "Who Killed Vincent Chin?" to not only commemorate this milestone event in Asian American and civil rights history but also to promote conversation and dialogue around important questions about race, hate crimes and social justice.  The Hon. Denny Chin and Dean Frank Wu, whose Vincent Chin trial re-enactment script inspired this production, will introduce the performance and participate in the talkback afterwards.  Register now for this one-time special event taking place on Tuesday, May 22, at New York Law School, during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.  More details at http://bit.ly/revisit_vchin.
