Huhnsik Chung, New Partner-in-Charge of Edwards Wildman NY Office

Thanks for Coming to "Revisiting Vincent"

On May 22, "Revisiting Vincent" was performed at New York Law School to great acclaim. AABANY working with a4 (Asian American Arts Alliance) and MOCA (Museum of Chinese in America) wanted to not only mark the 30th anniversary of a watershed moment in Asian American and civil rights history but to re-tell this story to a wider audience.

The performance, directed by Soriya Chum and Elena Chang of a4, featured a talented cast of actors who brought the trial to life, not just with the words from the actual transcripts but also through music, movement and footage from the documentary "Who Killed Vincent Chin?"

After the performance, Judge Denny Chin and Dean Frank Wu, whose original re-enactment script inspired this new work, engaged the audience in a lively talkback session that provided the historical and legal context of the case, explaining the changes in law and society that remains the legacy of Vincent Chin.  The comments and questions shared by the audience revealed how much the production had an impact on them.

Corky Lee added an extra dimension by sharing with us a slideshow of photos he took in Detroit 1983, recording the protests of a galvanized Asian American community outraged by the lenient sentences given to two white men who pled guilty to killing a young Chinese-American man on the eve of his wedding.  Corky made available two prints from that slideshow for us to auction off during the reception, to help raise funds for the production.

To see some photos taken by Francis Chin, go to bit.ly/Who_Came2_VincntChin.  The text of AABANY's introduction before the performance appears at bit.ly/RevstngVncnt_AABANYintro.

AABANY, a4 and MOCA thank our sponsors, New York Law School, NYU A/P/A Institute and Arnold & Porter, for helping to make this event possible.  We also thank our Community Partners for helping to spread the word about this program throughout the community.
