AABANY Central Park Picnic on July 28

AABANY's Young Lawyers Committee and Litigation Committee co-sponsor the 5th Annual Central Park Picnic on Saturday, July 28. Friends and family are welcome. For details and to register, click here. Admission is free.

AABANY's Student Outreach Committee together with Shearman & Sterling co-sponsor a Resume Review Workshop on July 18. Have your resume reviewed by experienced attorneys so that it is the best resume that it can be for the upcoming interview season. Admission is free but registration is required. AABANY Summer Reception at Kenyon & Kenyon on July 12

Please join AABANY for its annual summer reception, graciously hosted by past AABANY President John Flock, partner at Kenyon & Kenyon. The reception runs from 6 pm to 7 pm. Admission is free but RSVP is required by July 11 here. Feel free to stay for the Board meeting afterward. If you plan to attend, RSVP here

Cleary Gottlieb Presents: Citywide Diversity Reception on July 10

The Hon. Denny Chin, United States Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit, will be the keynote speakers at this year’s Citywide Diversity Reception presented by Cleary Gottlieb taking place on July 10. Judge Chin was one of AABANY’s first presidents and continues to remain highly active in AABANY. It’s a great event, and admission is free but RSVP is required. To register, click here.

AABANY Co-Sponsors 3rd Annual Asian American & Pacific Islander Leadership Forum on July 10

The Council of Urban Professional (CUP) presents its 3rd Annual AAPI Leadership Forum. Among the topics to be discussed will be creating a leadership pipeline for the next generation of AAPI leaders. To learn more about the event, check the listing under Upcoming Events.

AABANY Co-Sponsors LGBT Asian American/South Asian Lawyers Reception on July 17

AABANY, together with LeGaL – The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, South Asian Bar Association of New York, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, are co-hosting the LGBT Asian American/South Asian Lawyers Cocktail Reception on July 17 at Kaye Scholer. This networking reception recognizes the diversity within the LGBT and APA/API communities and also provides support to LGBT attorneys in corporate, commercial, government, and public interest practice. This year the keynote address will be presented by Justice Sabrina McKenna of the Hawaii Supreme Court. For more information, click here.

Save the Date: 2012 Fall Conference on Sept. 15

Save the Date! AABANY’s 2012 Fall Conference will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

This year’s them is “Leaping to New Heights,” and we plan to have two slates of CLE programs, a full-day trial skills CLE program, a full-day pitch session and an In-House Counsel Forum. AABANY Seeks Legal Interns

Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2012 Legal Internship Program.  Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.  Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis.  For full details and information on how to apply go to bit.ly/Lgl_Intrn_Details.  Please direct any questions to Executive Director Yang Chen at yang.chen@aabany.org.

AALDEF Request for Nepali Volunteers

Founded in 1974, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is a national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.

For Summer 2012 and Fall 2012, AALDEF seeks undergraduate or graduate volunteers who are fluent in both Nepali and English to participate in client legal meetings as interpreters. Volunteers will gain valuable experience working alongside AALDEF attorneys in client advocacy and community education, and receive close supervision in a legal environment. A minimum time commitment of 5 hours per week is highly desired.

Interested volunteers should contact AALDEF staff attorney Shirley Lin at slin@aaldef.org by June 18 (Summer 2012) or July 31 (Fall 2012).

Court Sponsored Volunteer Attorney Program

Do you have some time to volunteer to assist self-represented litigants in New York's courts?  Many opportunities exist through several Volunteer Attorney Programs to get trained to provide legal advice and assistance to pro se clients in housing, family law, consumer debt and foreclosure cases.  Please visit the Court Sponsored Volunteer Attorney Program’s website to learn how you can help.
