Join AABANY at the End of Summer Happy Hour on August 29

August is upon us, and that usually means we have a few more weeks before the Labor Day weekend signals the official end of summer. Before we bid a fond farewell to Summer 2012, join AABANY for our annual End of Summer Happy Hour. This year we will gather at Tavern29 on East 29th Street, near Park Avenue South. Catch up with members old and new. This happy hour will be part of our "Get to Know AABANY" series so we invite law students, lawyers and legal professionals who are not yet AABANY members but would like to learn more about who we are and what we do. Also, you can find out more about our upcoming 2012 Fall Conference at the happy hour. For more details, click here.

Join AABANY for Ping Pong and Pool at Slate on Aug. 9

Where are the ping pong players and pool sharks among AABANY's members? If you're up for showing us some of your table tennis prowess or pocket billiards talents, save the date for August 9 when AABANY hosts a "net"-working night of ping pong and pool at Slate. Capacity is limited, and members should sign up here, and non-members should sign up here.

Registration deadline is August 7.  Please sign up now!

AABANY Launches 2012-13 Mentorship Program

We are pleased to announce the opening of AABANY's Mentorship Program for the year 2012-2013.

The purpose of the program is to provide support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. Each mentee is matched to a mentor who will serve as a teacher, role model and resource to the mentee. By way of one-to-one relationships and events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance the professional growth, and legal and networking skills of both mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees will be AABANY members and may come from any level of experience and practice area.

Deadline for mentees to sign up is this Friday, August 10.

White House Nominates Pamela K. Chen for U.S. District Judge Opening in EDNY

AABANY Co-hosts Movie Night on Aug. 1

From Julie Huang, PR professional and President of Kaimen Company (and AABANY member):

On Wednesday , August 1, Asian American organizations [including AABANY] hosted a special Movie Night at the IFC Center to see Alison Klayman critically-acclaimed new documentary film, “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry”.  Many attendees took advantage of the IFC promo code at the box office for this particular showing of the film. Others who cared more about convenience than the IFC community ticket promo bought their tickets on www.movietickets.com ahead of time.

Milbank Diversity Scholars Program

Our friends from the Inter-APALSA Council passed along this announcement:

Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP is pleased to accept applications to its Diversity Scholars Program. Milbank is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the individual differences among us are (i) understood, respected and appreciated, (ii) recognized as sources of strength for the Firm, and (iii) valued as qualities that enrich the environment in which we work.

Each year Milbank selects law students who will receive a salaried 2L summer associate position and a $50,000 scholarship. Factors considered in the selection of Milbank Diversity Scholars include academic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and a sincere interest in our practice. Students who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms are encouraged to apply. To be named a Milbank Diversity Scholar, candidates must be in good standing at an ABA accredited law school and have successfully completed their first year of a full-time JD program. Interested candidates must submit an application form, essay, official law school transcript and resume by August 15th.

Application forms and more information on the program can be found here.
