Join AABANY at the End of Summer Happy Hour on August 29

August is upon us, and that usually means we have a few more weeks before the Labor Day weekend signals the official end of summer.  Join AABANY for our annual End of Summer Happy Hour to bid a fond farewell to Summer 2012. This year we will gather at Tavern29 on East 29th Street, near Park Avenue South. Catch up with members old and new. This happy hour will be part of our "Get to Know AABANY" series so we invite law students, lawyers and legal professionals who are not yet AABANY members but would like to learn more about who we are and what we do. Also, you can find out more about our upcoming 2012 Fall Conference at the happy hour. For more details, click hereRegistration ends on August 24.

Thanks for Coming to Ping Pong and Pool at Slate on Aug. 9

On August 9, AABANY hosted an evening of ping pong and pool at Slate, co-sponsored by Merrill Lynch/BofA. Karen Wu, co-chair of the Pro Bono and Community Service Committee, co-organized the event with Kai Cheng of Merrill Lynch/BofA. Attendees included Bobby Liu, General Counsel at MD Sass, past president James Chou, current President Jean Lee, and the Hon. Robert Reed. Karen ran a mini speed tournament in which contestants took turns exchanging volleys. Participants received goodies donated by JOOLA, official sponsor of USA Table Tennis. The ping pong took place in a private section of Slate that was reserved for AABANY. Those who were more inclined to billiards went downstairs and shot some 8 ball and 9 ball at the pool tables. A wonderful time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who came!

Mentors Needed for AABANY 2012-13 Mentorship Program

Thanks to all the mentees who signed up for AABANY's Mentorship Program for the year 2012-2013.  Mentee applications are no longer being accepted, but we do need all the potential mentors out there to sign up.  Deadline for mentor sign-ups is September 7.

The purpose of the program is to provide support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. Each mentee is matched to a mentor who will serve as a teacher, role model and resource to the mentee. By way of one-to-one relationships and events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance the professional growth, and legal and networking skills of both mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees will be AABANY members and may come from any level of experience and practice area.

SABANY Fundraiser for Victims of the Oak Creek Gurdwara Shooting

Please join SABANY for a fundraiser to support the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Sikh community. All donations will go to a fund established for the victims of the shooting, the injured police officer, and their families. Vermilion has generously agreed to co-sponsor the fundraiser and will donate a portion of all bar sales to the fund. For more information, see the listing under Other Events on the AABANY Calendar.

Milbank Diversity Scholars Program: Aug. 15 Deadline

Our friends from the Inter-APALSA Council passed along this announcement:

Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP is pleased to accept applications to its Diversity Scholars Program. Milbank is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the individual differences among us are (i) understood, respected and appreciated, (ii) recognized as sources of strength for the Firm, and (iii) valued as qualities that enrich the environment in which we work.

Each year Milbank selects law students who will receive a salaried 2L summer associate position and a $50,000 scholarship. Factors considered in the selection of Milbank Diversity Scholars include academic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and a sincere interest in our practice. Students who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms are encouraged to apply. To be named a Milbank Diversity Scholar, candidates must be in good standing at an ABA accredited law school and have successfully completed their first year of a full-time JD program. Interested candidates must submit an application form, essay, official law school transcript and resume by August 15th.

Application forms and more information on the program can be found here.
