To download a copy of the brochure with program descriptions, pricing and other information go to http://bit.ly/Fall_Conf2012_Brochur.

In addition to two slates of great CLE programs, this year AABANY leaps to new heights with a Pitch Session program and a Trial Advocacy Program (TAP).

The Pitch Session allows attorneys to meet directly with in-house counsel from companies like Hess, GE and Xerox to respond to their needs for legal services.  For more details go to http://bit.ly/Fall_Conf2012_PitchSession.

AABANY’s TAP provides participants the opportunity to conduct their own openings, directs, cross-examinations, and closings and receive critique from an expert faculty. To register you must go to bit.ly/Fall_Conf2012_TAP and complete your registration there. Deadline is August 28; capacity is limited.

After a full day at the conference, stay for the cocktail reception to mix, mingle and re-connect.

AABANY thanks Gibson Dunn for hosting and thanks Wells Fargo and Hudson Reporting for sponsoring.

Congratulations to New Officers

At AABANY's Board meeting held on August 7, the Board created two new officer positions: Vice President of Finance and Development and Vice President of Programs and Operations.  The resolution creating the positions, including a description of the duties of these new officers, can be found at bit.ly/AABANY_NewOfcrPos_2012.  John Rogers was appointed by the Board to be the Vice President of Finance and Development.  James Yu was appointed by the Board to be the Vice President of Programs and Operations. Please join us in congratulating John and James as we welcome them to these important new roles.

AABANY Co-Sponsors Deferred Action Clinic on Aug. 25

AABANY, together with MinKwon Center for Community Action, KALAGNY and the Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, are co-sponsoring an Open Clinic on August 25: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals for DREAMers.  This event provides an opportunity for attorneys to volunteer and give back to the Asian American community members by providing basic legal consultation and assistance in filing deferred action and employment authorization for DREAMers. Volunteer attorneys will be providing one time consultation and no follow up necessary.  Participants must take a CLE course on August 20 at 7 pm.  For more details see the listing under Upcoming Events on the AABANY Calendar.

AABANY End of Summer Happy Hour: Aug. 24 Deadline

Join AABANY for our annual End of Summer Happy Hour to bid a fond farewell to Summer 2012. This year we will gather at Tavern29 on East 29th Street, near Park Avenue South. Catch up with members old and new. This happy hour will be part of our "Get to Know AABANY" series so we invite law students, lawyers and legal professionals who are not yet AABANY members but would like to learn more about who we are and what we do. Also, you can find out more about our upcoming 2012 Fall Conference at the happy hour. For more details, click hereRegistration ends on August 24.

AABANY Testifies at City Council Districting Commission on Aug. 16

On August 16, AABANY, through its Executive Director Yang Chen, gave testimony at a public hearing convened by the City Council Districting Commission.  AABANY testified as a member of ACCORD, the Asian American Community Coalition on Redistricting and Democracy, and urged the Commission to draw lines that kept communities of interest together in Manhattan.  Citing the Voting Rights Act and applicable Supreme Court precedent, AABANY indicated that the current district lines in Chinatown and the Lower East Side may not comport with legal requirements.  As part of its testimony, AABANY submitted a copy of its March 2003 letter to the Department of Justice, which dealt with the same issue.  To read the testimony and the letter, go to bit.ly/blog_Testimny_CityCnclDstrctngComm

Get to Know AABANY Summer Social at Stitch Lounge

On Thursday, August 16, 2012, AABANY members enjoyed lively company and great food at Stitch Bar and Lounge on West 37th Street near 8th Avenue in Manhattan. The “Get to Know AABANY Summer Social,” co-sponsored by AABANY’s Women’s, Immigration and Nationality Law, and Student Outreach Committees, drew over 40 members to the spacious midtown lounge. Special thanks to Women’s Committee member Rebecca Ulich for her assistance in organizing the event.  Thanks to Women’s Committee co-chair Liza Sohn for the photos.

Legal Outreach Volunteering Opportunity

Sheila Bautista, AABANY member and prosecutor in the Manhattan DA’s office, shares the following volunteer opportunity with us:

Since 1983, Legal Outreach has provided underserved minority students in New York City with the academic support and mentorship they deserve. As rising ninth graders, students begin the program by participating in the Summer Law Institute, a five-week program that concludes with a mock trial in front of a real judge in a real courtroom. In high school, students participate in Legal Outreach’s College Bound program, a rigorous college preparatory track of after-school tutoring, Saturday writing classes, SAT preparation, mock trials and debates, life skills courses, internships, and mentoring from staff, law students, and professional attorneys.

Legal Outreach is currently seeking to recruit volunteer attorneys to serve as mentors to students participating in its Constitutional Law Debate program, one of the key components of the College Bound Program. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a rewarding program with proven results—100% of Legal Outreach students graduate high school in four years, compared to 59% of New York City students. Over 99% of Legal Outreach graduates have matriculated at four-year colleges and 68% percent matriculate at highly selective colleges, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, University of Michigan, Smith, and Wesleyan.

Mentors Needed for AABANY 2012-13 Mentorship Program: Sept. 7 Deadline

The purpose of the program is to provide support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. Each mentee is matched to a mentor who will serve as a teacher, role model and resource to the mentee. By way of one-to-one relationships and events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance the professional growth, and legal and networking skills of both mentors and mentees.
