AABANY Board Vacancy: Sept. 7 Deadline

As announced on August 24, the appointment of James Yu to Vice President of Programs and Operations creates a vacany on the AABANY Board.  If you wish to apply for the vacancy, please send your statement of interest and a current CV or resume to Jean Lee as Chair of the Nominations Committee by email to [email protected].  You may also send it by fax to AABANY's fax number or by mail to AABANY PO Box. Both can be found on the AABANY website at bit.ly/Contact_AABANYAll applications must be received by September 7 to be considered.

Mentors Needed for AABANY 2012-13 Mentorship Program: Sept. 7 Deadline

Thanks to all the mentees who signed up for AABANY's Mentorship Program for the year 2012-2013.  Mentee applications are no longer being accepted, but we do need all the potential mentors out there to sign up.  Deadline for mentor sign-ups is September 7.

The purpose of the program is to provide support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. Each mentee is matched to a mentor who will serve as a teacher, role model and resource to the mentee. By way of one-to-one relationships and events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance the professional growth, and legal and networking skills of both mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees will be AABANY members and may come from any level of experience and practice area.

AABANY Seeks Legal Interns

Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2012 Legal Internship Program.  Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.  Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis.  For full details and information on how to apply go to bit.ly/Lgl_Intrn_Details.  Please direct any questions to Executive Director Yang Chen at [email protected].

Thanks for Coming to Our End of Summer Happy Hour

More than 100 AABANY members and friends registered for the End of Summer Happy Hour on August 29 at Tavern 29 (on 29th and Park Avenue South) and from about 6 pm to 9 pm, it seemed like everyone who signed up showed up to join AABANY to bid a fond farewell to summer 2012. Attorneys, law students, in-house counsel, members and non-members met, mingled and caught up with each other over drinks and munchies. We took over the second floor, and for those who wanted some fresh air, they could take their networking to the outdoor rooftop space.

About an hour into the event, President Jean Lee stood on a chair and at the top of her voice encouraged everyone to sign up for the Fall Conference. For those who didn’t hear everything she said, Fall Conference brochures were available for everyone to take with them. Thanks to all for coming and making this our biggest End of Summer Happy Hour yet. We wish everyone a happy, safe and fun Labor Day Weekend.

AABANY Co-Sponsors DACA Pro Bono Training on Sept. 5

On September 5, AALDEF will be providing a training session at O'Melveny & Myers for anyone who wishes to volunteer as pro bono counsel to assist undocumented Asian immigrants to apply for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). DACA provides an opportunity for undocumented Asian youth to live and work legally in the United States, and an estimated 100,000 undocumented Asian immigrants are eligible to apply for the benefits of DACA. AABANY is pleased to co-sponsor this training session with MuBANY, SABANY and KALAGNY. To learn more check the listing under Upcoming Events on the AABANY Calendar.

AABANY Co-Sponsors RightsFest 2012

Join AABANY for RightsFest 2012, a film festival organized by the Fred T. Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights and Education, a program of the Asian Law Caucus. This year's theme is Civil Rights and Sports, and AABANY is proud to be community sponsor for Transcending: the Wat Misaka Story, a documentary about the first Asian American basketball player drafted into the NBA. More than six decades before Linsanity, the film traces Wat Misaka's path from college basketball to the NBA at a time of racial tensions that saw the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. For more details, check the listing under Upcoming Events.

APALA-NJ Foundation Golf Outing: Sept. 7

Our sister affiliate APALA-NJ will be holding its 7th Annual APALA-NJ Golf Classic and Dinner for the Benefit of the APALA-NJ Foundation, with a special tribute in honor of Anish Joshi, Esq. (1970-2012). The event takes place on September 27, at Royce Brook Golf Club - The West Course (Private), in Hillsborough, NJ. Early bird deadline is this Friday, September 7. For more details, including sponsorship opportunities, see the listing under Other Events.

On Sunday, October 21, LUNGevity Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will be holding a 3K walk/run in Battery Park City called "Breathe Deep NYC" to fight lung cancer.  AABANY would like to field a team in honor of an AABANY member who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.  To join the AABANY team and to learn more about the event go to bit.ly/BreatheDeepNYC.

Legal Outreach Volunteering Opportunity

Sheila Bautista, AABANY member and prosecutor in the Manhattan DA’s office, shares the following volunteer opportunity with us:

Since 1983, Legal Outreach has provided underserved minority students in New York City with the academic support and mentorship they deserve. As rising ninth graders, students begin the program by participating in the Summer Law Institute, a five-week program that concludes with a mock trial in front of a real judge in a real courtroom. In high school, students participate in Legal Outreach’s College Bound program, a rigorous college preparatory track of after-school tutoring, Saturday writing classes, SAT preparation, mock trials and debates, life skills courses, internships, and mentoring from staff, law students, and professional attorneys.

Legal Outreach is currently seeking to recruit volunteer attorneys to serve as mentors to students participating in its Constitutional Law Debate program, one of the key components of the College Bound Program. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a rewarding program with proven results—100% of Legal Outreach students graduate high school in four years, compared to 59% of New York City students. Over 99% of Legal Outreach graduates have matriculated at four-year colleges and 68% percent matriculate at highly selective colleges, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, University of Michigan, Smith, and Wesleyan.
