Fall Conference Takes Place This Saturday, Sept. 15

After many months of preparation, we look forward to everyone joining us this Saturday, September 15, at Gibson Dunn for the 2012 AABANY Fall Conference -- a full day of CLE programming, including an all-day Trial Advocacy Program, pitch sessions with 16 leading companies, and forums for in-house counsel and those interested in the judiciary. At the luncheon Anika Khan, Senior Economist at Wells Fargo, will give a presentation about the current state of the economy. At the end of the day, we will have a cocktail reception for our attendees to meet, mingle, catch up and connect. Mentors and mentees for the 2012-13 AABANY Mentorship Program will get to meet for the first time at the cocktail reception. And if you still have energy left after all that, there's an after-party.

If you have not yet registered, final registration closes on Thursday, September 13. We do not plan on taking any onsite registrations this year so if you wish to attend, please register by Thursday at bit.ly/2012_fallconf.

Don Liu's Recent and Upcoming Speaking Engagements

Don Liu, General Counsel of Xerox and a member of AABANY's Advisory Committee, is highly sought-after as a speaker.  Last month, he spoke at the NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals) National Convention held at the Hilton and later this month, he will be the keynote speaker at the Korean Community Center of Princeton's Chuseok Gala.  We congratulate Don on being recognized as a speaker on issues of importance to the Asian American community.

Legal Outreach Volunteering Opportunity

Sheila Bautista, AABANY member and prosecutor in the Manhattan DA’s office, shares the following volunteer opportunity with us:

Since 1983, Legal Outreach has provided underserved minority students in New York City with the academic support and mentorship they deserve. As rising ninth graders, students begin the program by participating in the Summer Law Institute, a five-week program that concludes with a mock trial in front of a real judge in a real courtroom. In high school, students participate in Legal Outreach’s College Bound program, a rigorous college preparatory track of after-school tutoring, Saturday writing classes, SAT preparation, mock trials and debates, life skills courses, internships, and mentoring from staff, law students, and professional attorneys.

Legal Outreach is currently seeking to recruit volunteer attorneys to serve as mentors to students participating in its Constitutional Law Debate program, one of the key components of the College Bound Program. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a rewarding program with proven results—100% of Legal Outreach students graduate high school in four years, compared to 59% of New York City students. Over 99% of Legal Outreach graduates have matriculated at four-year colleges and 68% percent matriculate at highly selective colleges, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, University of Michigan, Smith, and Wesleyan.
