Recovering from Hurricane Sandy: Help Needed

Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by Hurricane Sandy.  Our friends in other bar associations and community groups are already mobilizing to get help to those who need it most. For example, we posted on the blog information from the Nigerian Lawyers Association about volunteer opportunities through NYSBA and the City of New York, at bit.ly/blog_voluntrOprtntsSANDY.  In addition the NLA shared information from ProBono NEt regarding Hurricane Sandy legal relief efforts: bit.ly/ProBonoNet_Sandy. Also, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association circulated a highly useful update on court closures and openings and bar association resources to help victims of the disaster, which can be found on our blog at bit.ly/MBBA_updtSANDY

The Asian American community has been hit hard, particularly in lower Manhattan, which was crippled by power outages and poor communications. CAAAV (Coalition Against Anti-Asian Violence) coordinated efforts to get much needed supplies, food and information to residents in Chinatown, and the Lower East Side, as reported in this re-blogged post at bit.ly/blog_Sandy_HitLower.  Also, AAFE (Asian Americans for Equality) has announced emergency loan programs for small businesses and homeowners impacted by the storm in the five boroughs: bit.ly/SANDY_EmrgncyLoans

We anticipate that the road to recovery will be long and arduous and that many in the Asian American and larger community will need legal assistance.  If you are interested and able to lend a hand, please send an email to [email protected] with your name, contact information and areas of legal expertise.  We will disseminate further information on how you can help with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts as more details become available.

Stay safe!

Nominations for AABANY Board Positions Due by Nov. 9

As announced in a standalone email last week, the first deadline for nominations for the AABANY elections coming up in January 2013 is Friday, November 9.  If you are interested in running for a Director or Office position, please make your submissions by that first deadline.  More details can be found at http://bit.ly/1stCall_2012-13BdNom.   If you are not able to submit by this first deadline, you can still make your submission in person at an open meeting scheduled for November 13; details to follow.

Fall into Fashion with Banana Republic, Nov. 8

Mingle and enjoy refreshments with fellow members of the Women’s Committee and IP Committee while being treated to a night of styling advice and discounted shopping (25% off) at Banana Republic’s SoHo store.  The presentation portion of the evening will begin at 7 pm sharp.  Men are welcome (and will have their own stylists too)!

We will also be collecting donations for the Asian American Federation Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.  Please note that this BR location is accepting donations of canned goods and gently used clothing.  To rsvp go to  bit.ly/Fall_into_Fashion.
