The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund is seeking volunteer attorneys, law and undergraduate students, and community volunteers to assist in monitoring poll sites during the elections in NYC, NJ, and Virginia on November 5 to assess compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act. Attorneys and law students can receive pro bono credits or free CLE (including ethics) credits.
In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote. For example, poll workers were hostile and made racist remarks, poll sites had too few interpreters to assist Asian American voters, translated voting materials were missing or hidden from voters, and ballots were mistranslated.
Volunteers are needed to inspect poll sites for required language assistance, interview voters, and document instances of anti-Asian American voter discrimination. Bilingual ability in an Asian language is helpful but not required.

Alice Young and Yang Chen to be Honored at Moon Festival Gala on Oct. 25
NAAAP New York will recognize Ms. Young and Mr. Chen along with other honorees and leaders in the Asian America community during its first annual Moon Festival Honoree Gala to be held at Gotham Hall in New York City on Friday, October 25, 2013. The Moon Festival Honoree Gala will honor New York's most influential Asian & Pacific Islander Americans ("APIA") in various professions, including media, public service, entrepreneurship, culinary arts and corporate (law). Preet Bharara, United States Attorney for the South District of New York, was also named NAAAP-NY's 2013 Public Service Honoree. Proceeds from the event will benefit the NAAAP-NY Scholarship Fund, a program instituted over a decade ago to benefit APIA scholars in the greater New York metropolitan area. The Honoree Reception will be hosted by Richard Lui, MSNBC Anchor.

Law Student Survival Workshop at NYU School of Law on Oct. 26
AABANY's Student Outreach Committee is pleased to announce the second annual Law Student Survival Workshop. This year it will be held at NYU School of Law on Oct. 26 and in addition to the speakers from AABANY's committees and career panels, it will feature a keynote speech by Prof. Jerry Kang, Straus Fellow and David M. Friedman Fellow at NYU Law. Prof. Kang will speak about his work on implicit bias and its impact on APAs in the legal profession. For more details and to register go to bit.ly/ls_survival.
Growth of Asian Real Estate Segment and Purchasing Power in NYC, Oct. 30
AABANY's Real Estate and Solo and Small Firm Practice Committees will be hosting a CLE Dinner on October 30, 2013, starting at 6 pm, entitled "The Growth of the Asian Real Estate Segment and Their Purchasing Power in NYC,” to be held Mudan Restaurant, Queens Crossing, Flushing, New York. The last Census shows that the Asian segment comprises at least 14% of the population in New York City. This segment is still growing. Much of this growth has been attributed to the influx of Asians both locally and from Asia. This CLE will discuss how to understand and address the specific demographics and needs of the Asian purchaser of real estate in New York City. The program will be presented from the perspective of a CPA, an attorney, and a commercial and residential realtor.
AABANY is pleased to announce the formation of its new Career Placement Committee. The primary purpose of the Career Placement Committee is to match qualified AABANY members with available legal job positions. To accomplish this, the Career Placement Committee is launching the AABANY Career Exchange which will serve as a clearinghouse for all legal positions brought to its attention and will proactively seek to match qualified AABANY candidates with such open positions. To this end, the Career Placement Committee is actively seeking information regarding open legal positions. If you are aware of any such positions please email the Career Placement Committee co-chairs (Robert Leung, Michael Park and Gurinder Singh) at careers@aabany.org.
In addition, the Career Placement Committee is also interested in getting to know AABANY members who are currently seeking or considering seeking a new position. It is important for the Career Placement Committee to understand the skill sets, special expertise and interests of AABANY members currently conducting or thinking about a job search in order to be able to best match qualified candidates with particular open positions. To facilitate the process, the Career Placement Committee kicked-off the AABANY Career Exchange by holding 15-minute informational one-on-one meetings with interested AABANY members at the Northeast Regional/ Fall Conference on September 21, 2013.

Joint Minority Bar Association Judicial Screening Panel Reports Qualification Ratings
The Joint Minority Bar Association Judicial Screening Panel recently interviewed and rated judicial candidates for the Civil Court of the City of New York and the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Interviews were conducted by representatives of the Asian American Bar Association of New York, Dominican Bar Association, LGBT Bar Association, Metropolitan Black Bar Association, Puerto Rican Bar Association and the South Asian Bar Association of New York.

Proceeds from this event will benefit LUNGevity Foundation, the leading private provider of research funding for lung cancer. The mission of LUNGevity Foundation is to have a meaningful and immediate impact on improving lung cancer survival rates, ensure a higher quality of life for lung cancer patients, and provide a community for those impacted by lung cancer. LUNGevity funds the most promising research into the early detection and successful treatment of lung cancer. LUNGevity also supports the largest national grassroots lung cancer network, as well as the largest online support community for those affected by lung cancer.
