AABANY's Annual Meeting is taking place in February 2015. We hope to see you there! At our Annual Meeting, elections will be conducted to elect 6 Board Directors and 6 AABANY Officers for the coming year. The Officer positions include:
President-Elect, Vice President of Programs and Operations, Vice President of Finance and Development, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Membership Secretary.
The Nominations Committee welcomes applications to fill the vacancies immediately. The Nominations Committee will select a slate of candidates to be included on a ballot form that will be sent out to the membership a month before the Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee may also interview candidates before making its determination.

Asian Americans remain grossly underrepresented in positions of influence, leadership and power within the legal profession. The number of Asian American partners in law firms and general counsels in our largest corporations do not reflect the diversity that can be found in today’s law school classes or the ranks of junior associates at law firms.
Each Don H. Liu Scholar will receive:
A financial scholarship of $15,000;
Access to numerous AABANY programs;
Opportunities for summer employment and internships; and
Mentoring, guidance and support by the Scholarship Committee and others throughout his/her law school and legal careers.

As part of the recently opened "Chinese American Inclusion/Exclusion" exhibit at the New York Historical Society, AABANY will be performing a shortened version of its highly engaging "22 Lewd Chinese Women" Trial Reenactment on October 18, 9am-11am.
Upon the arrival of a ship from China in 1874, a San Francisco state official determined that 22 Chinese women traveling alone were “lewd”—or prostitutes—and placed a bond of $500 on each woman in order to disembark. The women were detained and legal proceedings followed, including a trial and appeals to the United States Supreme Court, where issues of immigration, federalism, and human rights were raised. Legal experts lead a trial re-enactment of this case, telling the story of these 22 women through narration, discussion, and historic photographs.

AALDEF seeks volunteers to monitor the November 4th elections for compliance with the federal Voting rights Act and to document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote. For example, poll workers were hostile and made racist remarks, poll sites had too few interpreters to assist Asian American voters, translated voting materials were missing or hidden from voters, and ballots were mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans, and vice versa. When the news media reported on election results and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were often overlooked.
The Board of Elections in the City of New York is requesting for assistance with the recruitment of Korean Election Day Interpreters in Queens, and Chinese Interpreters in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The New York City Bar Association, founded in 1870 in response to public concern over the New York City justice system, is a voluntary association of students and legal professionals that has grown to a membership of over 24,000.
