AABANY's Annual Meeting is taking place in February 2015. We hope to see you there! At our Annual Meeting, elections will be conducted to elect 6 Board Directors and 6 AABANY Officers for the coming year. The Officer positions include:
President-Elect, Vice President of Programs and Operations, Vice President of Finance and Development, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Membership Secretary.
The Nominations Committee welcomes applications to fill the vacancies immediately. The Nominations Committee will select a slate of candidates to be included on a ballot form that will be sent out to the membership a month before the Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee may also interview candidates before making its determination.

Asian Americans remain grossly underrepresented in positions of influence, leadership and power within the legal profession. The number of Asian American partners in law firms and general counsels in our largest corporations do not reflect the diversity that can be found in today’s law school classes or the ranks of junior associates at law firms.
Each Don H. Liu Scholar will receive:
A financial scholarship of $15,000;
Access to numerous AABANY programs;
Opportunities for summer employment and internships; and
Mentoring, guidance and support by the Scholarship Committee and others throughout his/her law school and legal careers.
AABANY is a legal co-sponsor of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund’s longstanding Asian American Election Protection and Poll Monitoring initiative. AALDEF seeks volunteers to monitor the November 4th elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act and to document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote. For example, poll workers were hostile and made racist remarks, poll sites had too few interpreters to assist Asian American voters, translated voting materials were missing or hidden from voters, and ballots were mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans, and vice versa. When the news media reported on election results and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were often overlooked.

The Student Outreach Committee is teaming up with the NYU APALSA to present a Job Skills Workshop on Tue Nov. 4 at NYU from 6:15-8:15pm. Dinner will be served.
The event, open to both students and attorneys, will feature a panel of speakers who will discuss interviewing skills, professionalism, and how to carry/conduct yourself. After the panel there will be a resume review for a limited number of students. In addition to critiquing students' resumes, we would like the volunteer attorneys to use the opportunity to informally evaluate and provide feedback on the students’ demeanor/professionalism - topics the panel will have just discussed.

Although Asian Pacific Americans have been often portrayed as well-assimilated, "well-off,” successful, and considered part of the model minority, in reality many APAs experience significant socio-economic challenges. This CLE program and discussion forum highlights the changing demographic and needs of the burgeoning APA population in New York City, as well as policies affecting the APA community’s access to language assistance to governmental benefits and services, specifically for housing assistance and other benefits. We also hope to provide legal tools and resources, which law school students and members of the bar can use to offer pro bono or low-cost legal assistance to low or fixed-income members of this community.

NEW YORK – October 23, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is pleased to announce that on October 20, Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti announced the appointment of Hon. Alexander B. Jeong as Deputy Administrative Judge of the New York Criminal Courts, effective immediately. Judge Jeong is the first Asian Pacific American to serve the Unified Court System in this capacity. In his new role, Judge Jeong will oversee one of the nation’s busiest courts, which has trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors and petty offenses and preliminary jurisdiction over felonies in New York City’s five boroughs. The Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition needs members of the bench and bar to serve as oral argument judges for the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds of the Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition, on Friday November 7th during the NAPABA Convention. The preliminary rounds are from 9:15 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. and the quarterfinal round is from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the convention hotel, Westin Kierland Resort. You can judge one or both rounds.
Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2014 Legal Internship Program. Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
