On May 31 from 6pm-8pm, White & Case LLP will present Race, Color, and Citizenship: Ozawa and Thind in the 1920s.
The Asian Affinity Group at White & Case invites you to join us for a reenactment of Ozawa v. United States and United States v. Thind, two important U.S. Supreme Court cases in Asian American history dealing with issues of race, color, and citizenship. At a time when U.S. naturalization laws dictated that only free white persons and persons of African descent could qualify as United States citizens, two individuals of Asian descent sought to challenge the definition of what it means to be American. This reenactment was developed by members of the Asian American Bar Association of New York, including the Honorable Denny Chin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Judge Chin will be joining us for the presentation and delivering remarks. Members and friends of the Asian Affinity Group will be participating in the reenactment.
Should the event be oversubscribed, names will be placed on a waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.
May marks Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States. Yet, as the fastest growing population in the country, undocumented stories are often overlooked. FWD.us and MinKwon Center for Community Action are proud to present two short documentaries Halmoni and Dream Riders Across America to educate AAPI communities on pains of family separation as well as dreams and hopes of undocumented immigrant youth.
The documentary screening will be followed by a short community discussion; a special Open Mic Night will close the event.
Light fare and refreshments will be available. Event will start promptly at 7:00pm, screening will start at 7:10pm. WeWork Studio Square is kindly providing their Terrace space for this event.

The theatrical premiere of Seoul Searching, an indie film by Benson Lee, will be held at the AMC Empire 25 theatre at Times Square on June 17, 2016. The movie will be followed by a brief Q&A with the cast members and filmmakers. Cost of tickets will be $16 per person.
The ensemble cast is made up of Cha In Pyo (“Mr. Kim), Justin Chon (“Sid Park), Teo Yoo (“Klaus Kim”), Esteban Ahn (“Sergio”), Hee Jun Han (“Chow), Jessika Van (“Grace Park”), Rosalina Leigh (“Kris Schwartz”), Sue Son (“Sara Han”) and Crystal Kay (“Jamie Choi”) along with Executive Producer, Ken Jeong.
Attendees of this special screening are also invited to attend an after-party with cast members for free, from 9:30pm to midnight. Location TBD.
The Programming Committee for the 2016 AABANY Fall Conference is now accepting programming proposals. Ideas for programming will be accepted until Monday, June 20, 2016. Thereafter, the Programming Committee will make the final selections of the programs.
Please note that submission of a programming proposal does not guarantee acceptance by the Programming Committee. Furthermore, upon receiving your submission, the Programming Committee may ask that you combine your proposed program with other similar proposed programs or collaborate with other members or affiliates to enable us to diversify panels and maximize speaking opportunities.

Congratulations to Judge Doris Ling-Cohan, long-time friend of AABANY and New York’s first Asian-American woman to serve as an appellate judge, on her 2016 Woman of Distinction Award from the Women of Color Collective (WoCC) at New York University.

Growing up, Ling-Cohan did not imagine that one day she would be a leader, or even a lawyer. “As a child, I didn’t dare to dream. Reality simply stifled my dreams,” Ling-Cohan recalled in her speech at the WoCC ceremony. “Like many of my generation, growing up in Manhattan’s Chinatown, my parents were immigrants. My father worked in a laundry, and my mother was a seamstress. As a child, I too worked in a sewing factory sewing and cutting thread.”
Ling-Cohan entered law school hoping that her law degree could be a tool for social change, both for her own community and other disadvantaged groups.
