 The Don H. Liu Scholars Program is currently in its third year and is currently accepting applications. The application deadline is November 18, 2016.

Founded in 2014 by two past presidents of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), the Don H. Liu Scholars Program, Inc. (“Program”) seeks to identify, cultivate and inspire future Asian American leaders within the legal profession in order to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection Committee will select up to 3 scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 each and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Target Corporation. Additionally, scholars will have assistance in securing summer internships.
To be eligible for the Program, the applicant must be of Asian descent and be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a law school in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or the District of Columbia. Application materials are due on November 18, 2016.

AABANY is recruiting volunteers to be trained to give trainings on how to get housing repairs to the Flushing community at Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) located at 35-24 Union Street.
Trainings to the volunteers will be provided by Legal Services NYC at 40 Worth Street and by webcast. Starting on September 21, volunteers can shadow experienced public interest lawyers on a monthly basis at night. Eventually, once the volunteer becomes comfortable, they can give the training themselves under the supervision of an experienced housing lawyer. Volunteers also have the opportunity to work at the Pro Bono Committee’s Monthly General Advice Clinic in Manhattan Chinatown!
We are looking for committed volunteers who have demonstrated interest in social justice and want to help the community. As a volunteer, you will be asked to commit to being trained, observing at least one training, and giving one or more trainings to the community. Chinese language skills are a plus although may not be necessary.

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee is excited to launch a group membership rate for APALSA members. For a group rate of $100, AABANY will offer your APALSA members free one-year memberships. This group rate covers all AABANY events, including free and discounted CLE and non-CLE programs, AABANY’s Mentorship Program and Diversity Career Fair & Expo at the Annual Fall Conference.
This is a huge discount given that the regular rate for law students is $15 for individual members. For APALSA members who are already dues-paying members, participation in this group rate will extend current memberships by another year. So often, talented law students don't have the necessary expertise to be able to market themselves effectively in their resume. Students will bring working copies of their resume and be ready to discuss with you their experiences. The New York City Bar Office for Diversity and Inclusion is pleased to release the 2015 Diversity Benchmarking Report. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the successes and challenges of the law firms that have signed onto the City Bar’s Statement of Diversity Principles face in their respective diversity and inclusion efforts, as well as recommendations for enhancing the career opportunities of women and minority attorneys.
The results of this survey are an integral part of how the City Bar establishes goals and priorities to best support our signatory firms through our Office and our diversity committees, and we are grateful to the firms that participate in the survey each year and help us to provide this resource.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
