AABANY Co-Sponsors Discovery and Investigations in China CLE, Jan. 24

Please join the Litigation Committee for Discovery and Investigations, a CLE event with two panels of experts, co-sponsored with Fordham Law, Consilio, and the Chinese Business Lawyers Association. This event will take place on January 24, 2017 from 6:30pm to 9pm in the Costantino Room - Second Floor at Fordham Law School (150 W 62nd Street).

Document collection and discovery has become an increasingly important and fraught issue in China. U.S. litigations often require the collection and review of documents in China in ways that conflict with Chinese laws, such as laws on state secrecy and financial privacy. How can discovery be conducted in China while avoiding legal, financial, and ethical problems? And what about internal investigations, which often require reviews of sensitive documents and materials, which may also implicate Chinese laws and regulations? This event will discuss the challenges and solutions in both internal investigations in China and also document discovery in China as part of U.S. litigations.

RSVP to events@cblalaw.org.

Asian Americans Say Obama Had an Impact on Them, China Daily

Read Paul Welitzkin’s article in the China Daily US, in which he touches upon the different ways that the Obama administration affected Asian Americans. Welitzkin draws from various perspectives, including that of Executive Director Yang Chen:

“President Obama also issued an executive order on diversity and inclusion within the federal government as related to the federal workforce and it had a big impact on Asian Americans who work for the federal government,” said Yang Chen, executive director of the Asian American Bar Association in New York.

However, Chen said there were also some negative developments during the Obama years “such as the failed prosecutions of two Chinese-American scientists, one a professor and the other a federal employee, which illustrated how the fear of China affected Chinese Americans.”

Highlight: Brooklyn Nets vs. Houston Rockets

On Sunday, January 15, AABANY joined with basketball fans from AAAYA (Association of Asian American Yale Alumni), Apex for Youth, Asian Ivy League, Binghamton University Asian and Asian American Alumni Council, CAAA (Cornell Asian Alumni Association), FF Fraternity, Harvard Asian American Alumni Association, Harvard Business School Asian American Alumni Association (HBS4A), and Wellesley Asian Alumni Association (W3A) to catch the Brooklyn Nets facing off against the Houston Rockets at the Barclays Center. It was Taiwanese Heritage Night, and we were hoping to catch Jeremy Lin playing against his former teammates, but Jeremy was sidelined due to injury. The closest our fans could get to him was the bobblehead that was given out to the first 10,000 spectators to arrive.

The Nets were only a few points behind the Rockets at the half, but in the third quarter, the Rockets blasted ahead of them and by the fourth quarter, the Rockets’ lead widened considerably. It was a loss for the hometown team, but our group managed to have a good time anyway.
