Press Release: AABANY Congratulates Ona Wang on Her Historic Appointment to the Bench in the Southern District of New York

NEW YORK - July 26, 2017 - The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) congratulates Ona T. Wang on being appointed a United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of New York. Ms. Wang is the first Asian American to be appointed a magistrate judge in the Southern District of New York. Click here to read more.

Press Release: AABANY and KALAGNY Congratulate Andrew T. Hahn, Sr. as New York Law Journal Distinguished Leadership Award Honoree

NEW YORK - July 27, 2017 - The Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (“KALAGNY”) and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) congratulate Andrew T. Hahn, Sr. on being named a 2017 Distinguished Leadership honoree by the New York Law Journal, the most circulated legal periodical in the U.S. This honor is a part of the New York Law Journal’s Professional Excellence Awards event, which recognizes outstanding attorneys and judges every year. The Distinguished Leadership award honors lawyers whose leadership skills have proven to be exceptional in their effectiveness and the inspiration they provide to others. Mr. Hahn and the other Distinguished Leadership honorees will be featured in a special section of the New York Law Journal and honored at a dinner at Tribeca Rooftop on October 17, 2017.

AABANY Co-Sponsors Defender at AAIFF 2017

Remarkable stories are told every year at the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF), the first and longest running festival for Asian American cinema in the country. At the upcoming 40th AAIFF, held from July 26th to August 5th, AABANY is cosponsoring Defender, the intense and personal story of San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who strives to combat racism, police brutality, and injustice against minorities while showing the critical role of the public defender in the justice system. Check out the trailer for Defender hereThis film will be featured on Aug. 5 at 12pm at the Asia Society.

AABANY Annual Picnic, Aug. 6

AABANY Co-Sponsors the ABA Annual Meeting, Aug. 10 to Aug. 15

The 2017 American Bar Association Annual Meeting is headed to New York, August 10 – 15.  The ABA is working with AABANY and other Local/Affinity Bar Associations and New York Law Firms, on the new CLE in the City Series, in conjunction with the ABA Annual Meeting.

This innovative set of programs offers:

  • 12 specialty tracks to fit your legal interest
  • 4.5 CLE credits with over 30+ sessions
  • Affordable tickets without a meeting registration fee - $25/session
  • Programs presented at leading law firms or special venues in midtown Manhattan

AABANY at the Trial of Two Pizzas, Aug. 10

The Trial of Two Pizzas, to be held during the ABA Annual Meeting in New York City starting on August 10, an old rivalry will be put to rest at last. Both New York thin crust pizza and Chicago deep dish pizza are well-loved, but only one can be the best. Presided by AABANY-member Hon. Doris Ling-Cohan, the Trial of Two Pizzas will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown on Thursday, August 10th.

The Trial of Two Pizzas is included in the CLE in the City Series, as part of the ABA Annual Meeting. Both ABA and non-ABA members can sign up for just $25 per program, and every program comes with access to the Trial of Two Pizzas on August 10th.

Beyond the Trial of Two Pizzas, AABANY will be performing a reenactment of the Heart Mountain Draft Resisters Trial on August 10th from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at Fordham Law School as part of CLE in the City.  Read more here.

On Saturday, August 12, 2017, the ABA Coalition on Racial & Ethnic Justice (COREJ) will host a dynamic Hackathon titled “ABA JusticeHack New York” at Fordham University School of Law, Lincoln Center, NYC.  This dynamic Hackathon will bring together multidisciplinary teams of community, legal, law enforcement, criminal justice and technology stakeholders in a collaborative, engaging environment to develop innovative and technology- based solutions to address tension points between law enforcement and communities of color.

The complimentary, all day event will start at 8:00 a.m. with a continental breakfast, lunch and snacks will also be available to participants the event will end with Demo Presentations and Judging, followed by evening lite bites at 6:00 p.m.  For more information and to register or rsvp, click here.

AABANY Co-Sponsors: City Council District 20 Candidate Forum, Aug. 20

Before the September 12th primary election, hear the candidates' positions on important issues impacting Downtown Flushing, Murray Hill and Queensboro Hill.  The forum will be held on Sunday, August 20th from 2-4pm at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel.  For more information click here.

2017 Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition

Law Students: compete for $10,000 in scholarships in The Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition. The Competition is open to all students but is especially designed to reach out to APA law students and provide an opportunity to showcase their writing and oral advocacy skills.

We will host the Northeast Regional Competition at the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City on October 14. AABANY members are invited to judge the preliminary rounds; NY CLE credit will be available. The winners of the Regional advance to the National Competition in Washington D.C. in November. The team registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017 at 5 p.m. EDT.

Mentorship Program:
AABANY’s Mentorship Program provides support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. Each mentee is matched to a mentor who will serve as a teacher, role model, and resource to the mentee. By way of one-to-one relationships and Mentorship Program events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance professional growth and networking skills of both mentors and mentees.

Wanted: Volunteer Attorney/Law Grads for Appellate Court Judge

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.

Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.

Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.

Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2017 Legal Internship Program. Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
