Women make up half the population, but less than one-third of state judges; people of color make up 40% of the population, but less than 20% of state judges. The federal judiciary is also unrepresentative of the population as a whole; 79.31% of recently confirmed nominees are men, and 89.66% are white.
Please join American Constitution Society at NYU Law and NYU Law's Judicial Clerkship Office for a discussion with judges about this “Gavel Gap” and the importance of diversity on the bench. Moderated by Douglas Keith, Counsel of the Democracy Program at Brennan Center, our panel of esteemed judges will reflect on their personal experiences and share thoughts on what it is about diversity that makes for better justice.
