Description:
Are you a law student or recent graduate considering a clerkship? The panelists will offer their insight on the unique challenges faced by diverse applicants.
The panel of successful minority attorneys will offer advice about the application and interview process, share their stories of responsibilities as a clerk, share their career success stories, and offer advice about how to capitalize on opportunities and overcome challenges as a minority attorney after clerking. A networking event will follow the discussion and attendees will be able to have one-on-one conversation with the panelists.
Light food and refreshments to be served.
Panelists:
Eric Lee is a Senior Counsel in the Appeals Division of the New York City Law Department, where he represents the city in state and federal appellate courts. Previously, he worked as a litigation associate at Arnold & Porter LLP and clerked for the Honorable Denise J. Casper on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Ilana J. Marcus is presently the Principal Court Attorney for Acting Supreme Court Justice Margaret A. Chan, a position she has held since 2007. From 2004 through 2007, she served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of New York's Law Department in the Family Court Division. Ilana co-chairs the Committee to Advance the Status of Women in the Law of the New York Women's Bar Association (NYWBA) and recently joined the interview committee of the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program (SCS JIP). Ilana is a graduate of Brooklyn Law School and SUNY Geneseo.
Michael Krouse is an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Before law school, he worked for McKinsey & Company, the United Nations, and a development NGO based in Afghanistan. Michael received his J.D. from the Yale Law School. He briefly worked for Williams & Connolly before joining the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served four years as a Judge Advocate. After leaving active duty, Michael clerked for Judge Paul A. Engelmayer of the U.S. District Court for Southern District of New York and Judge Jose A. Cabranes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Michael was associated with the New York office of Skadden, Arps, SLate, Meagher & Flom LLP.
Rena Malik is currently a Court Attorney for the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court in the Second Department. She previously served as the Law Clerk to the Hon. James E. d'Auguste, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, and as an Assistant Law Clerk to the Hon. Larry D. Martin, New York State Supreme Court, Kings County. Before working in the court system, Rena was a Litigation Associate at Kaufman Borgeest & Ryan and also served as an Associate Law Clerk to the Hon. Roger J. Miner in the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2010, Rena graduated cum laude from New York Law School, where she served as a Notes & Comments Editor on the New York Law School Law Review. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program (SCS JIP), and is an active member in the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY) and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), for which she serves as the Judiciary Committee's Secretary.
