A networking reception will follow.
Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm
Location: Nixon Peabody LLP, 437 Madison Avenue (Between 49th and 50th Street), New York, NY 10022
Title: Get a Running Start! Pathways for Women Interested in Politics
Program Description: Although women make up 50.38% of the U.S. population, they are severely under-represented in public office, particularly among the highest ranking: women represent only 19.6% of Congressional districts, 8% percent of governorships, and 18.9% of mayoralties in cities with populations over 30,000, This program seeks to demonstrate, tangibly, how women can become more engaged in public service, whether by serving in public office or by supporting women who run for public office. We will have an interactive panel discussion with women who have been appointed or elected to public office followed by an engaging Q&A with audience members.
Moderator: Valerie Cartright, Councilwoman, Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York
Panelists: Minna Elias, New York Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney; Karin Elinski, Immediate Past Head of TIAA-CREF Government Relations & Public Policy; and Mary Silver, Candidate, New York City Council, District 2
