Purpose of the Training: To help prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges utilize best practices in their work with people with mental illness in New York City's Criminal Court system. This training will cover critical areas of legal practice related to working with individuals with mental illness involved in the criminal justice system. Program sessions will include salient information, case studies, tools and resources to help legal professionals develop core competencies that can improve outcomes for people with mental illness and enhance public safety. Application for CLE accreditation of this program in New York is currently pending. What You Will Learn: To recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness; Best practices for communicating effectively with individuals with mental illness; Strategies for gathering relevant behavioral health-related information from individuals with mental illness; Tips for understanding the behavioral health system in New York City; To understand and utilize relevant statutory mechanisms, including CPLs 730 and 390 and MHL 9.43; Understanding diversion and best practices; The scope of behavioral health services in City jails and State prisons, including discharge planning; Guidelines for information sharing; and Ethical issues relating to all of the above.
