You are invited to an after-work event to see an art exhibition about immigration and the labor of Chinese immigrant women at Equity Gallery on Thursday 3/26, 6-8 pm. Siyan Wong, a.k.a. Joane Wong, is the artist, AABANY member and past Labor & Employment Law Committee Co-Chair.
This exhibition is on view now to April 11, 2026, at Equity Gallery (245 Broome Street, NYC) FREE of charge.
In "Mother Warriors" (Solo), Siyan Wong paints immigrant Chinese women working in garment factories, restaurants, and home care, bringing visibility to lives that often go unseen.
Drawing on her experience as a workers’ rights lawyer, Wong’s self-taught practice combines direct observation with a flattened, patterned style that emphasizes both the physical demands of labor and the interior lives of her subjects.
In collaboration with the New York Artists Equity (NYAE), Wong also presents two simultaneous exhibits exploring the immigrant experience: “Familiar Stranger” and “Immigration in America.”
Borrowing its title from Wong’s painting of an elderly woman collecting cans on the Lower East Side, “Familiar Stranger” is a group exhibition featuring work by contemporary artists who expand the dialogue on human life made abject during their assimilation to the United States: Luisa Henao, Ying Hung, Sharon Cheuk Wun Lee, Elim Mak, Mary Ting and Siyan Wong.
"Immigration in America," brings together NYC high school students whose artwork responds to the present moment, adding another voice to the broader conversation on immigration.
