AABANY Leadership Development Program

AABANY’s Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a 6-month long interactive leadership training course that is focused on cultivating AABANY members who are senior attorneys through the promotion process within law firms, companies and the government.  In 2018, we successfully launched our law firm partnership track program focused on guiding a selected group of APA law firm associates on the partnership track (please click here to learn more about ALDP).   This year, we are expanding ALDP to include an in-house counsel track program to guide a small group of qualified senior APA in-house counsel into senior management positions within their organizations (e.g., SVP, Deputy GC or GC).   What makes ALDP unique is our following focus:

  • Focus on Soft Skills - ALDP's expectation is that our participants have already mastered the technical skills to be an effective lawyer.  Therefore, our purpose is to help our participants develop the "soft skills" they need in order to rise within their organization.  Topics covered in our 2018 pilot program included understanding the partnership process; identifying mentors and sponsors; personal branding; executive presence, and business development. For our 2019 program we aim to build upon these topics as well as introduce topics pertinent to our in-house counsel track.
  • Focus on Small Set of Qualified Participants - ALDP is not aimed at helping a large number of participants with varying levels of experience.  Rather, our ideal participant pool consists of a small group of qualified senior attorneys who have completed basic leadership training and who have a strong desire and potential to be leaders within their organizations.   Each participant must submit an application with a recommendation letter from the leadership of their organization as part of the screening process.
  • Focus on AABANY Community - ALDP recruits participants who are AABANY members. Our faculty are senior attorneys who are leaders within the AABANY community as well as those who are supportive of AABANY’s mission.  We believe that operating this program at the local level allows us to facilitate in-person meetings and build a stronger mentorship relationship between the faculty members and the participants as well as a strong community among the participants themselves.
  • Focus on Accountability - ALDP will be carried out through 2-hour monthly breakfast meetings in New York City (usually held on Fridays) over the course of 6 months starting in September 2019 so that adequate time is given to each topic discussed and meaningful relationships can be developed.  Each participant is expected to come to each meeting fully engaged and prepared, and are expected to apply the concepts learned and discussed each month.  Each participant is also expected to take the initiative to seek out one or more mentors within the panel of distinguished ALDP law firm partner and in-house faculty members.
