AABANY's Pro Bono Committee is hosting the Remote Clinic + Caravan Information Session on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 5:00 PM via Zoom.

Since June 2020, the Pro Bono Committee has been running the Remote Pro Bono Clinic where members of the community can call or email to seek legal information and resources. Due to the pandemic, all in-person walk-in Pro Bono Clinics that were to be held in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens were cancelled. As of December 2020, we have answered close to 300 calls for the Remote Pro Bono Clinic. We are continuously seeking volunteer attorneys and language interpreters for Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. (Other dialects of Chinese may be helpful as well.)

For upcoming 2021, the Pro Bono Committee will be collaborating with law student Jenny Park in hosting a weeklong Caravan for law students to learn from volunteer attorneys and help update the covid-19 resources on AABANY’s website. Any law students who wish to volunteer should consider attending the information session for training purposes.

Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a specific area of law (but it is preferred). Attorney volunteers will only be providing legal information and referrals and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member.

Due to the high number of calls received regarding housing issues, there will also be a brief training to analyze a sample answer form to a nonpayment petition by an experienced housing attorney.

Tentative Agenda:
  • Introduction of Remote Clinic
  • Discussion of the Caravan's Goals
  • Interpretation Skills
  • Analysis of Sample Answer to Nonpayment Petition
Attorneys and interpreters interested in volunteering for the Pro Bono Clinic should contact Judy Lee or Asako Aiba at probono@aabany.org.

Zoom codes will be sent to registrants on the morning of January 28. Sign up using the "Register" link above.
