Professor Elaine M. Chiu is Professor of Law and a Faculty Director of the Ronald H. Brown Center of Civil Rights at St. John’s University School of Law in New York City. She is a respected scholar who has written about difficult issues in contemporary criminal justice including intimate partner violence, and the intersection of cultural beliefs and criminal liability. At the Ron Brown Center, Professor Chiu’s work focuses on advancing the legal scholarship of students and other academics through the Center’s Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development. She also advises and mentors the Center’s honor students known as the Ron Brown Scholars and a student organization called the Coalition for Social Justice. Finally, the Center runs a premier law school pipeline program for college students from diverse backgrounds every summer. The Ron Brown Law School Prep Program for College Students has proudly helped almost 200 individuals attend more than 54 different law schools and become lawyers throughout the country. Prior to coming to St. John's, Professor Chiu was a Research Fellow at Columbia University School of Law, a Climenko-Thayer Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School, an adjunct faculty member at Cardozo Law School. Before teaching, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan. Professor Chiu is a cum laude graduate of Cornell University and earned her JD at Columbia University School of Law where she was a Senior Editor of the Columbia Law Review and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Assistant District Attorney Joseb “Joe” Gim is the Chief of the Hate Crimes Unit at the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, where he is also a Deputy Chief of the County Court Trial Bureau overseeing prosecutors assigned to felony crimes. The Hate Crimes Unit prosecutes hate crimes within Nassau County. The Unit also provides programming and outreach to increase awareness about the impact of hate and bias incidents on communities and undertakes efforts to increase reporting and investigation of potential hate crimes. Prior to joining the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office he was a prosecutor at the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office in Staten Island, NY, and prosecuted violent felonies, homicides, gang violence, and career criminals. ADA Gim has over sixteen years of prosecutorial experience and has been active in community organizations including AABANY, the NYC Bar’s Criminal Courts Committee, and the Korea Bar Association. Presently, he is the co-chair of the Prosecutor’s Committee of AABANY and a member of the Anti-Asian Violence Task Force of AABANY. Joe Gim has been an active member of AABANY and is a former Chair of the Issues Committee and participated in the formation of the Prosecutor’s Committee. ADA Gim has developed programming and participated in programming addressing Hate Crimes and Bias Incidents for AABANY and the NCDA.
