The Nassau County Equal Justice in the Courts Committee invites you to attend a FREE virtual CLE program on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., titled "Human Trafficking Awareness: Dynamics, Legal Processes, and Practitioner Perspectives."
In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, this program will provide a comprehensive overview of human trafficking led by an experienced survivor advocate. The opening segment will establish essential context and ground the discussion, helping attendees understand the dynamics, indicators, and complexities associated with trafficking.
Following this foundational overview, the program will examine how human trafficking cases move through the Nassau County court system. This segment will outline court structure, case processing, and the procedural distinctions that set trafficking matters apart from traditional criminal proceedings.
Building on these components, a senior prosecutor and veteran public defender will share their perspectives on handling trafficking‑related cases. Their insights will highlight practical considerations, challenges, and approaches from both sides of the courtroom, offering a balanced and informative view of current practice.
The program will conclude with a moderated Q&A session, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the presenters, explore nuanced issues, and consider the real‑world implications of this evolving area of law.
The program will be moderated by the Honorable Maxine S. Broderick, Judge of the Nassau County District Court. Panelists include Christine Guida, Esq., Deputy Bureau Chief of the Special Victims Bureau, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, N. Scott Banks, Esq., Attorney-in-Chief, Nassau County Legal Aid Society, and Ms. Feride Castillo, Co-Founder, Program Development & Education Director of ECLI-VIBES.
For those eligible for CLE credit, one (1) credit in the Area of Professional Practice will be available. This program is free and open to all, and registration is not required. The Microsoft Teams link to access the program is provided below or by clicking on the flyer.
