AALDEF Seeks Economic Justice Project Interns: Deadline December 1

Law students and undergraduates who wish to pursue economic justice for Asian immigrant workers might be interested in the following opportunity from AALDEF. Note the Dec. 1 deadline:

AALDEF is seeking law student and undergraduate interns for its Economic Justice project.  The Economic Justice project provides legal advocacy and direct representation to Asian immigrant workers experiencing wage-and-hour, discrimination, retaliation, and workplace safety violations.  The workers we assist are from a variety of industries, including the restaurant, beauty salon, housework/nanny, and construction industries, although this list is not exhaustive.  For the Spring 2011 semester, AALDEF is seeking energetic EJ law interns to conduct legal research, participate in client intake and outreach to community-based organizations, and litigation-related assignments.  There will also be an opportunity to work on the landmark trafficking case, Signal v. David, for which a class certification decision is pending.  The commitment for Spring 2012 is a minimum of 10-15 hours/week.  Undergraduate EJ interns will conduct outreach, follow-up, and general research.  While not required, special consideration will be given to applicants fluent in another language, including Gujarati or Korean.  Individuals interested in applying for Spring 2012 should e-mail a cover letter, resume, and (for law students) a writing sample not exceeding ten pages to slin@aaldef.org no later than December 1, 2011.  Please feel free to forward this announcement widely.

Apply for Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program

We are pleased to announce that the 2012 application for the Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program (JMB JIP) is now available.  Log on to the website at www.jmbjip.org for more details.  As stated on the JMB JIP website:

[The Program] offer[s] law students who have completed at least one year of law school the opportunity to continue their legal education as summer judicial interns in New York and New Jersey metropolitan area courthouses.  Judicial internships are exceptional learning opportunities that offer tremendous insight into the process of judicial decision-making.  They offer an opportunity to strengthen analytic and legal writing skills.

Apply for AALFNY 2012 Community Service Scholarships

The Asian American Law Fund of New York, Inc. (the “Fund”), a non-profit organization originally established in 1993 by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), invites law students to apply for its Community Service Scholarship Awards (“Asian American Law Fund Scholarship” or the “Scholarship”). The Fund will award Scholarships in the amount of $5000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.

The completed Scholarship Application and all required materials must be postmarked by April 1, 2012. Applications and further information can be found at bit.ly/AALFNY_Schlrshps2012.
