AABANY Night at the Theater: Chinglish

Thanks to all who bought tickets for Chinglish by the January 6 deadline. An AABANY member will be distributing your tickets and you will be notified closer to the date with instructions on how to get your tickets at the theater on the night of the show. The show starts at 8 pm and we plan to meet in the lobby at 7:30 pm on January 20.

For those who missed the deadline but are still interested in obtaining tickets, please contact [email protected] for further information.

Next Annual Dinner Committee Call: Jan. 10

The next meeting of the Annual Dinner Committee will be by conference call on January 10 at 5 pm. If you are interested in helping AABANY plan its biggest event of the year, please contact Jean Lee, Annual Dinner Committee Chair, at [email protected]. The Annual Dinner will take place at Cipriani Wall Street on February 29, 2012.

Wells Fargo and AABANY Present Workshop on Financial Services, Jan. 11

Wells Fargo, together with AABANY's Real Estate, Young Lawyers and Solo and Small Firm Practice Committees, will present on January 11 a workshop on financial services for young lawyers and practitioners in solo and small firms. The panel will be moderated by Margaret Ling, AABANY Director and Real Estate Committee Chair. The panel will include AABANY Solo and Small Firm Committee Co-Chair Pauline Yeung-Ha. Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program Deadline extended to Jan. 13

We are pleased to announce that the 2012 application for the Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program (JMB JIP) is now available.  Log on to the website at www.jmbjip.org for more details.  The deadline to apply is now extended to January 13.  As stated on the JMB JIP website:

[The Program] offer[s] law students who have completed at least one year of law school the opportunity to continue their legal education as summer judicial interns in New York and New Jersey metropolitan area courthouses.  Judicial internships are exceptional learning opportunities that offer tremendous insight into the process of judicial decision-making.  They offer an opportunity to strengthen analytic and legal writing skills.

AABANY Co-sponsors Panel on Judicial Selection Process, January 19

Former AABANY President and current Co-Chair of the Judiciary Committee, James Chou, will be speaking on a panel discussion entitled "Demystifying the Judicial Process: How You Can Actively Participate in the Judicial Selection Process," to be held at the New York City Bar on January 19. AABANY Annual Meeting Scheduled for Jan. 24

Please join AABANY at its Annual Meeting, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 24, at the offices of First American Title Insurance at 633 Third Avenue. Full details, including links to notice, proxy, ballot and candidate biographies, can be found at bit.ly/Annual_Mtg2012.  Proxies are due by January 17.

USMJ Vacancy in SDNY

For those interested in applying to become a United States Magistrate Judge, here is an announcement from Theo Cheng, Co-Chair of the Judiciary Committee:

The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has announced a vacancy for a full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge position in Manhattan. The SDNY's public notice, which contains additional information about the position and the application, is available on the court's website at http://www.nysd.uscourts.gov/cases/show.php?db=notice_bar&id=266. AABANY encourages all qualified attorneys with an interest in serving in the federal judiciary to submit an application, which is due no later than February 29, 2012. Earn CLE Credits by Judging National Mock Trial Competition

On March 10 and 11, 2012, Pace Law School in White Plains will again be hosting a National Mock Trial competition featuring some of the top schools in the country, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth, among others.

Pace is offering 3 free general CLE credits for all attorneys who volunteer to judge a round. A round lasts no longer than 3 hours. Free parking is available and Pace will provide complimentary food and beverage. You can judge as many rounds as you'd like.

NYSBA Antitrust Section Seeks Diverse Attorneys

The New York State Bar Association's Antitrust Section is seeking to diversify its membership and invites APA attorneys and law students to join the section. As part of this outreach, the section will pay for the registration fees associated with attending its annual meeting day program and evening events on January 26, 2012. Apply for AALFNY 2012 Community Service Scholarships

The Asian American Law Fund of New York, Inc. (the “Fund”), a non-profit organization originally established in 1993 by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), invites law students to apply for its Community Service Scholarship Awards (“Asian American Law Fund Scholarship” or the “Scholarship”). The Fund will award Scholarships in the amount of $5000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.

The completed Scholarship Application and all required materials must be postmarked by April 1, 2012. Applications and further information can be found at bit.ly/AALFNY_Schlrshps2012. Do you have some time to volunteer to assist self-represented litigants in New York's courts?  Many opportunities exist through several Volunteer Attorney Programs to get trained to provide legal advice and assistance to pro se clients in housing, family law, consumer debt and foreclosure cases.  Please visit the Court Sponsored Volunteer Attorney Program’s website to learn how you can help.
