Call for Nominations: Apply by Dec. 13

Call for Nominations - By mail, email, fax, or in person: December 13

AABANY's Annual Meeting is taking place in February 15, 2017. We hope to see you there! At our Annual Meeting, elections will be conducted to elect 6 Board Directors and 7 AABANY Officers for the coming year. The Officer positions include:

  • President-Elect,
  • Vice President of Programs and Operations - 2 Positions,
  • Vice President of Finance and Development,
  • Treasurer,
  • Secretary, and
  • Membership Director.

The Nominations Committee welcomes applications to fill the vacancies immediately. The Nominations Committee will select a slate of candidates to be included on a ballot form that will be sent out to the membership a month before the Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee may also interview candidates before making its determination.

Please submit:
(i) a statement of interest declaring your intent to run; and
(ii) a current resume, biography or CV listing your experience and accomplishments and any honors received to date.

As part of item (i), please indicate your experience with AABANY if you have been an active member, describing any activities that you have participated in or helped to organize. If you have not been an active member in AABANY, explain what capabilities, resources, talents, skills, expertise, experience or any other contributions you would be able to make as a Board Director or Officer. Please also identify any activities indicating a dedication and commitment to issues of importance to the Asian Pacific American community.

AABANY Committee Chairs Info Session and Meet-and-Greet, Dec. 7

When: Dec. 7, 7:30pm-9:00pm
Where: Sullivan & Cromwell

The Election Is Over: How Did We Get Here? What Next?, Dec. 8

Panelists will discuss the impact of the presidential election on minority communities and the role of attorneys in support of these communities post-inauguration. 

 

Panelists include:

  • Amol Sinha, State Policy Advocate at Innocence Project and Vice President of Public Relations, SABANY.  
  • Sharaf Mowjood, Senior Producer for political video at the Huffington Post. Mr. Mowjood’s work covers editorial videos for politics and all digital verticals at the Huffington Post.
  • Sania Khan, Assistant Attorney General, ‎Office of the New York State Attorney General, Civil Rights Bureau.
  • Chris Kwok, Co-chair of  AABANY's Issues Committee.
  • Arun Venugopal, WNYC reporter and contributor to podcast, "United States of Anxiety," which covers the real people supporting Donald Trump in the suburbs of New York City.

Sports Outing: Brooklyn Nets vs. Houston Rockets, Register by Dec. 15

AABANY, APEX for Youth and FF Fraternity co-host a Sports Outing: Brooklyn Nets vs. Houston Rockets on January 15, 2017.

Price: $65, includes fees (the regular price is $99)

Apply for the Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program by Dec. 30

The Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program (“SCS JIP”) is now accepting applications for its LAW SCHOOL DIVISION.

The Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program seeks to cultivate and develop future leaders by placing students in judicial internships in state and federal courts in New York City. Our goal is to increase diversity in the legal profession by educating and empowering students from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds.

The Law School Division application can be found here or at www.scsjip.org. All applications must be in by 5pm ET on December 30, 2016 to be considered.

IMPORTANT: You must complete this linked application as well as send in your supplemental materials before the deadline to be considered.

Note: High school division applications will be available February 1, 2017.

Press Release: AABANY and VNSNY Announce Free 'Know Your Rights' Seminars in Mandarin and Cantonese

NEW YORK – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (“VNSNY”) are proud to announce their free public ‘Know Your Rights’ seminars on helpful legal information in Mandarin and Cantonese. These trainings are intended to educate Chinatown community members on housing repairs and tax filing. All trainings will be held at the VNSNY Chinatown Community Service Center located at 7 Mott Street. This three-part series is free of charge and open to any community member. AALFNY 2017 Community Service Scholarship: Apply by Mar. 31

AALFNY's 2017 Community Service Scholarship: Applications are available here, and must be postmarked by March 31, 2017.  
 
Up to three scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to law students with a demonstrated commitment to serving the Asian American community and who will be interning with a non-profit organization or governmental agency that is involved with the Asian American community in NY (see application for more details).

Wanted: Volunteer Attorney/Law Grads for Appellate Court Judge

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.

Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.

Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2016 Legal Internship Program. Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
