The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) Annual Meeting of Members (the “Annual Meeting”) will be held on February 13, 2018 at 7:00 pm ET at Dorsey & Whitney LLP, 51 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019.
At the Annual Meeting, there are three proposals scheduled to be voted on:
· Proposal 1 – To elect the officers identified on the proxy form to serve a one-year term for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2018 and ending March 31, 2019 (the “2018 Fiscal Year”);
· Proposal 2 – To elect five (5) directors from the eight (8) nominees identified on the proxy form to serve two-year terms beginning on the first day of the 2018 Fiscal Year; and
· Proposal 3 – To amend AABANY’s by-laws to increase the number of the Board Directors from thirteen (13) to nineteen (19), to make changes that provide for greater operational flexibility for AABANY such as in setting the date of future annual meetings of members, to make changes to conform to the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law and to make other ministerial changes.
Every Active Member (as defined in AABANY’s by-laws) in good standing (as defined in AABANY’s by-laws) shall be entitled to vote at the Annual Meeting.
Your vote is very important. Whether or not you plan to attend the Annual Meeting, we encourage you to complete and submit the proxy to help us ensure quorum at the meeting.
All completed proxies must be RECEIVED by February 8, 2018.
Deadline to register for the Annual Meeting: February 11, 2018.

In 1961, James Meredith applied for admission to the University of Mississippi. Although he was qualified, he was rejected -- Meredith was black, and the University had never admitted a black student. Represented by Constance Baker Motley and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Meredith sued in federal court in Mississippi, alleging that the University denied him admission because of his race.
In this reenactment, we tell the story of Constance Baker Motley and James Meredith and their battle with Ole Miss, based on court transcripts and other writings.
This presentation is a collaboration among the New York City Bar Association, the Asian American Bar Association of New York, and the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, and will feature narration by Judge Denny Chin and Kathy Hirata Chin and a cast that includes Judges William F. Kuntz and Margo Brodie of the Eastern District of New York and members of the co-sponsoring associations. 2.0 CLE credits in the new Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias requirement will be given.

We are seeking volunteers for AABANY’s February 14 Pro Bono Legal Advice Clinic. Those who are interested should contact ariana.pabalan@aabany.org.
When/Where:
February 14 from 6:30-8:30 PM at 33 Bowery, 2nd floor, New York, NY.
Volunteer Needs:
(1) Attorneys to provide legal advice and/or a referral, if appropriate. There is no language requirement. Interpreters will be provided, if needed. We are generally looking for attorneys who have practiced for about 5+ years, although this requirement is flexible. AABANY Membership required.
(2) Cantonese and Mandarin speaking interpreters. Bar admission not required.

On Tuesday, January 30th, at the NYU Cantor Film Center, AABANY co-sponsored the inaugural Korematsu Day Celebration. January 30 is Fred Korematsu’s birthday. The event featured prominent speakers such as Jack Tchen, founding director of the A/P/A Institute at NYU; Daniel Dromm, an openly gay City Councilman who helped pass a resolution that established Jan. 30th as the Fred T. Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution in New York City, and Karen Korematsu, long-time activist and daughter of Fred Korematsu.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force!
The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
