AABANY Presents: Belonging: Being Out and Asian in the Legal Profession and our Communities, Mar. 14

This diversity and inclusion panel discussion will provide various perspectives of being out as LGBT people and as Asian Americans at work, in the legal profession, our families, social media, and faith communities.  This annual educational panel provides an opportunity for LGBT API members of the bar in corporate firms, in-house, government, public interest, and law school to network and learn about current issues impacting our community and profession.

AABANY Co-sponsors: #MeToo and Harassment in the Workplace: A Roundtable Discussion, Mar. 15

In this roundtable discussion, Judge Shira Scheindlin, Of Counsel to the firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP and former United States District Court Judge; Michelle Goldstein, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Time Inc.; and Maureen McLoughlin, a partner in the Litigation and Labor & Employment Practice Groups of Davis & Gilbert, share their insight on sexual harassment and various types of discrimination in the workplace, including the legal and environmental conditions that led to the abuse and what lawyers and businesses can do in the future.

Nirupama Hegde, Employment Law Counsel at NBCUniversal Media, LLC, serves as the Moderator.

AABANY co-sponsors: Know-Your-Rights Tax Training, Mar. 16

The AABANY Government Service & Public Interest (GSPI) and Pro Bono Committee co-sponsor  Know-Your-Rights Tax Training on March 16th, at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA), 62 Mott Street.  This tax training is for community members to learn more about federal and state tax filings, especially with the new changes under the recently passed tax plan.

GSPI/Pro Bono Committees Joint Dinner Rescheduled to Mar. 21

The GSPI/Pro Bono Committees Joint Dinner originally scheduled for March 7th has been rescheduled to March 21. 

The dinner will be on March 21, 2018 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm at the Bite of Hong Kong restaurant in the Chinatown area. At the dinner, both committees would like to thank and recognize committee members and volunteers that made our Pro Bono Clinics, Trainings, DACA clinics and other activities a success this past year. We hope to see you there!

Backpack Fundraiser on March 22 to Benefit Children with Cancer and Han Choi Scholarship Fund

Backpacks to be donated to the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders

Proceeds to be donated to the Han C. Choi Scholarship Fund

March 22, 2018 – 6-8:30 PM @ Ichi Cellar 6 E. 32nd (bet. 5th & Madison)

Join us for a special fundraiser where we stuff backpacks with toys, arts & craft supplies, and other goodies for children with cancer. AABANY and KALAGNY will supply the bags and the goodies, while you help assemble and decorate the bags. Our goal is to assemble 100 bags for toddlers/kids, and teens.

Open bar and food will be served for participants.

AABANY Presents: Risks and Strategies for Foreign Companies Involved in US Litigation, Mar. 27

U.S. litigation involving foreign companies has become more prevalent in today’s global marketplace. This session will help the management team of foreign companies based in New York understand the framework and practices of commercial litigation in the U.S., and discuss key issues and strategic considerations that foreign companies confront when litigating in the U.S., as seen in recent cases. This session will also offer tips to the management team on how to manage a case more efficiently when working with outside counsel.

AALFNY Community Service Scholarships: Application Due March 30

The Asian American Law Fund of New York, Inc. (AALFNY) invites applications for its 2018 Community Service Scholarships. Up to three $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to JD students from ABA accredited law schools with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community and will be serving the New York Asian American community this summer through a community service or governmental organization project.

Thank You for Attending the Annual Dinner

On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, the Asian American Bar Association of New York hosted its Annual Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street. Our 2018 Annual Dinner drew more than 700 attorneys, judges, supporters and other business and community leaders. It is one of the signature events of the Asian Pacific American legal community. The theme for 2018 is Serving Our Community, Advancing Our Profession.

Congratulations to Hon. Doris Ling-Cohan

Congratulations to Hon. Doris Ling-Cohan who, on Monday, March 5, sat as part of a historic panel in the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Term. She was joined by Hon. Lizbeth Gonzalez and Hon. Carol Edmead for the first-ever all-female panel to sit at the Appellate Term, First Department. It was also the first time that a Hispanic American, Asian American and African American woman judge sat together on the Appellate Term. Justice Ling-Cohan presided. March is Women’s History Month, and we are proud of these judges for making history.

Highlight: March 8

On Thursday, March 8th, the AABANY Student Outreach Committee held a Resume Review Workshop at Fordham Law School. AABANY attorney members volunteered to spend one-on-one time with law students to go over resumes in preparation for applying to jobs in the legal profession, and law students were able to network and mingle over a selection of snacks and soft drinks while waiting.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force!

The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

Wanted: Volunteer Attorney/Law Grads for Appellate Court Judge

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.

Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.

Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.

Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission.
