AABANY will be co-sponsoring NAPIPA's Fifth Annual Scholarship Banquet, which will be held on September 21, 2018, at Golden Unicorn. The banquet will feature two distinguished honorees and speakers, Preet Bharara, former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Grace Meng, member of the United States House of Representatives for New York State’s 6th Congressional District.

AABANY Corporate Law Committee and Student Outreach Committee Present: What Do Corporate Lawyers Do? - A Pre-OCI Panel Information Session

The AABANY Corporate Law Committee and Student Outreach Committee will be gathering a group of APA law firm partners and in-house attorneys whose practices center on various different areas of the corporate practice to share their experiences with law students who may be considering joining the corporate practice. Heavy appetizers and dessert will be served. A short networking time will follow the panel discussion.

Know-Your-Rights Presentation and Clinic: Rent Overcharges in NYC
|
|
NEW YORK - July 17, 2018 - the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) is proud to partner with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) and Manhattan Legal Services (MLS) to host a Know-Your-Rights Presentation and Clinic on rent overcharge on August 1, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at VNSNY Chinatown Community Service Center, 7 Mott Street. The event is free and open to any community member.
The Know-Your-Rights presentation will address whether units are entitled to rent protections, rent overcharges and the legal remedies that are available. After the presentation, attendees can meet one-on-one with an attorney to discuss their rent issues and review their rent histories.

Free Tickets for AABANY Members: "A Whale of a Tale" Film Screening

The Asia Society will be screening A Whale of a Tale on August 8 and has offered AABANY 10 free tickets, which will be given to the first 10 AABANY members who register for the event. Each member can register and bring up to two guests (for a maximum total of three tickets per registration). Please register by July 25 to be eligible for the free tickets.
About A Whale of a Tale:
In 2010, a sleepy fishing town in Japan suddenly found itself in the worldwide media spotlight. The Cove, a documentary denouncing the town's longstanding whale and dolphin hunting traditions, won an Academy Award and overnight, the village of Taiji became a battleground for activists from around the world. Could a proud 400-year-old whaling tradition survive a tsunami of modern animal-rights activism and the colliding forces of globalism vs. localism?
A Whale of a Tale reveals the complex story behind the ongoing debate on the whale and dolphin hunting traditions. Told through a wide range of characters including local fishermen, international activists, long-time Japanese residents, and an American journalist, this powerful documentary unearths a deep divide between Eastern and Western thought on nature, wildlife, and cultural sensitivity in the face of global activism.
Documentarian Megumi Sasaki's third feature-length film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and has won awards in many other festivals. In August 2017, Sasaki published her first book with the same title of the film in Japanese. Winner of the 2018 Science Journalist Award, Okujirasama depicts the behind the scenes of the film’s production and delves into the historical and religious background of the whaling controversy. Join us for a screening of the film and a conversation between Sasaki and Asia Society Executive Vice President Tom Nagorski.

On Wednesday, July 18, AABANY’s Academic Committee and Litigation Committee co-hosted July’s Monthly Membership Happy Hour at Karaoke City. Attendees had a chance to mingle with lawyers of similar and different fields.

Volunteer with AALDEF to Protect Asian American Voting Rights
|
|
In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated “Asian” voting lines. When the news media reported on election results, Asian Americans were overlooked. In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns and document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.
We need your help. In 2016, our volunteers surveyed 13,846 Asian American and Arab voters in 11 Asian languages at 55 cities about their voting encounters. Volunteers work in three hour shifts. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers in October (90 minutes for CLE credits). All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help. Writers will be tasked with covering events of interest, researching developments in the legal field, and addressing issues that affect our communities on a generally quarterly basis. Writers are expected to cover assignments as well as develop their own topics and articles under guidance from the editorial staff.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force!
The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
