Pitch sessions: in-house counsel and law firms that wish to apply to participate must complete intake forms by August 31. See https://conference2018.aabany.org/pitch-sessions/
Diversity Career Fair: Applicants interested in attending the Informational Tables must complete the 2018 Diversity Career Fair Applicant Intake Form by September 14th and send a copy of your resume to resumes@aabany.org. AABANY is continuing its Professional Development Coaching program at this year's Fall Conference, and our focus this year will be on personal branding. The goal is to create a safe space for our participants where they can ask for, and receive, honest feedback on “blind spots” that may be inhibiting their career advancement. To this end, our proposed format is to have the participants give a one-on-one self-pitch to the Professional Development Coach they are paired with, followed by a feedback discussion, and ending with the participant giving another self-pitch, incorporating the feedback. Each session will be 30 minutes, and scheduled based on availability of the participants and their respective Professional Development Coaches. Please note this is a one-time session and there is no expectation of an ongoing coaching or mentoring obligation.

AABANY Co-Sponsors: NAPIPA Fifth Annual Scholarship Banquet

AABANY will be co-sponsoring NAPIPA's Fifth Annual Scholarship Banquet, which will be held on September 21, 2018, at Golden Unicorn. The banquet will feature two distinguished honorees and speakers, Preet Bharara, former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Grace Meng, member of the United States House of Representatives for New York State’s 6th Congressional District.

NAPIPA & C.C. Yin Scholarships for Justice Applications Open: August 31 Deadline Approaching
|
|
The National Asian Pacific Islander Prosecutors Association (NAPIPA) is proud to announce that the NAPIPA & C.C. Yin Scholarships for Justice will be awarded once again this year. The Scholarship is named in honor of distinguished Asian / Pacific Islander (API) community leader and entrepreneur C.C. Yin. It is intended to encourage law students who share NAPIPA’s mission and goals into pursuing careers in prosecution and continuing to help the API community.
This year, NAPIPA will award a Kaplan Bar Review course and a cash scholarship ranging from $500 to $1000 to each of three (3) law students.

Volunteer with AALDEF to Protect Asian American Voting Rights
|
|
In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated “Asian” voting lines. When the news media reported on election results, Asian Americans were overlooked. In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns and document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.
We need your help. In 2016, our volunteers surveyed 13,846 Asian American and Arab voters in 11 Asian languages at 55 cities about their voting encounters. Volunteers work in three hour shifts. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers in October (90 minutes for CLE credits). All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help. We are looking for staff writers to take on the important issues affecting the AABANY community through serious journalism, research, and writing.
Do you think that you have what it takes?
Writers will be tasked with covering events of interest, researching developments in the legal field, and addressing issues that affect our communities on a generally quarterly basis. Writers are expected to cover assignments as well as develop their own topics and articles under guidance from the editorial staff.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force!
The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
