The Hon. Randall Eng (Ret.), New York state’s first Asian American Presiding Justice, was honored with the OCA-NY Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday, September 28, at OCA-NY’s 42nd Annual Community Service & Leadership Awards Gala. Justice Eng has dedicated himself to public service for over three decades in a variety of positions. He served as the first Asian American Assistant District Attorney in his hometown of Queens County (1973-1980), the Deputy Inspector General of New York City (1980-1981), and also the Inspector General of New York City (1981-1983). In 2016, Judge Eng was awarded NAPABA’s highest honor, the Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award, and in 2017, he received AABANY’s Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award. The OCA-NY Lifetime Achievement Award is yet another well-earned recognition of both his contributions to New York State and the Asian American attorney community. Please join AABANY in congratulating Justice Eng on this well-deserved award and honor.

On Thursday, October 25, join KALAGNY and a distinguished panel at Fordham Law School for a workshop and discussion aimed at developing critical writing skills for practicing litigators. After a short reception (starting at 6:30 p.m.), participants will take a guided tour of the packet materials before concluding with a panel discussion featuring three important perspectives. | With the 2018 Midterm Elections coming up, AABANY's Community Response Task Force is focused on encouraging our own community to register and vote. Asian Americans as a whole have one of the lowest voter registration and turnout rates in the United States. CRTF is looking to gauge interest in and organize several voter registration and Get Out The Vote events targeted to our community. In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated “Asian” voting lines. When the news media reported on election results, Asian Americans were overlooked. In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns and document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.
We need your help. In 2016, our volunteers surveyed 13,846 Asian American and Arab voters in 11 Asian languages at 55 cities about their voting encounters. Volunteers work in three hour shifts. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers in October (90 minutes for CLE credits). All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help. AABANY’s September Membership Happy Hour took place on Wednesday, September 26 at Ainsworth Midtown on East 33rd Street. Although the Monthly Membership Happy Hours usually occur on the third Wednesdays of the month, we moved September’s because the third Wednesday was right before the Fall Conference, and lots of people were busy working on that so we decided to move the September happy hour to the last Wednesday.
The September Membership Happy Hour featured the Issues Committee and the Bankruptcy Committee. The Mentorship Program also co-hosted. A varied crowd of AABANY members and future members gathered to meet and mingle over drinks and delicious food, including sliders, wings, mac & cheese fries and other pub fare. Membership Director David Sohn gladly handed out drink tickets for free drinks for everyone who came.
The October Membership Happy Hour will take place on the regular third Wednesday of the month, October 17. More details to come; stay tuned. Hope to see you there!

| Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force |
| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
